I bought this Morgan for around melt value from a dealer under the mutually agreed assumption that the toning was probably manufactured. Can anyone verify the toning and possibly grade the coin? The coin is fairly clean, and the toning on the obverse is better looking than the scan reveals. It also appears to have a strange edge band above liberty's head - almost like the planchet was off center, or the die was cracked.
Thanks,

I agree that it is AT. The spots and blotchiness is a dead giveaway.

Have you checked the weight of the coin, is this real?
Sure looks suspicious.

Looks to be a nice coin if it is real. I'm not an expert by no means and I look forward to seeing what it turns out to be.

Looks natural, if ugly, to me.

You have to remember, bags of 03o and 04o dollars sat in gubmint vaults and everyone thought they were rare, until Christmas of 1962 (maybe a year off), when a dealer noticed he was getting solid BU bags of them. Check the redbooks back then, the 03o dropped from $1500 to $30 virtually overnight.

Nice coin. Some dark toning, which is not uncommon - weakly struck - some luster peaking through. Probably mint state.

Seems fairly natural to me I've seen slabbed 1904-O's in high mint state from PCGS with similar "mottled" toning

My vote is Natural Toning... I've slabbed a lot of common date Morgan's... and lots of them that look like that one.... one big hint is the "fingerprint" of black swirls on the Obv. Look at the 9:00 o'clock area... IMHO

The coin weighed the same as my others - 27 grams I think. My scale is only accurate to the nearest gram, so it's possible the weight is off.

Thanks for the opinions.
