I just received my 2011 Uncirculated coin set and my worst fears have been realized. The mint has simply stopped making the satin finish and switched to a brilliant finish for the coins. In all other aspects the coins are SMS coins. They are far better than the average circulation strikes and the mint has left us with no way to distinguish MS67 & MS68 circulation strikes from average SMS coins. This utterly destroys the value of high grade circulation strikes. I went back and checked my 2004 and prior uncirculated sets and those coins look like they were pulled from circulation strike production. They are possibly a small notch above the average coins that make it into rolls and bags but not by much. The 2011 coins are far and away SMS strike coins but once removed from the plastic they cannot be distinguished from circulation strikes by any measure other than grade and that is not enough. Finding an MS68 or even MS69 circulation strike coin used to be something special but from now on such finds, even though they will still be quite rare, will be worthless. Thanks a lot (NOT) mint. I already have both proof sets and it looks like they are using the laser on the cent, nickel, dime, and half dollars now. All of the proof devices suffer from a significant loss of detail when compared to their "uncirculated", AKA SMS, counterparts. I was shouting "the new phone books are here" a couple weeks ago when my 2009 quarter showed up in Coin World, great line.

Quote: clairhardesty: They are far better than the average circulation strikes That's because the new Mint Sets are still being struck on the "Uncirculated Coin" low-speed presses (as used for the Satin Finish coins). The low-speed presses are in their own (cleaner!) area, away from the main floor and its high-speed "business strike" presses.

My 2011 mint sets came this week. Think they were in the mail Wednesday or Thursday. The days run together.

I also received my 2011 proof, silver proof and mint sets this past week,on Wed. The coins look great but the packaging not so.I got a notice that the Army Comm.is on back order.I never got a back order before so what does that mean? Did the mint sell out of them and has to mint more or what? Does anybody know what back order means in this case? Comments/suggestions welcome thanks gasnan96

gasmam, don't worry about the backorder. We get those all the time, the mint will oversell some products, and the coins are finished, or the boxes, or packaging and such. Sometimes it's because the fulfillment center in St. Louis doesn't have the item... if it's the commem, probably coming from West Point.
We have had backorders never filled, and our money refunded... so it can happen, but most of the time we get the product.
