I am starting a collection of the Jefferson nickels. I went ahead and bought a dansco album for them and got the one with no proofs. I am in the middle of my Lincoln and my Kennedy halves set. I am just going to go the cheap and fun route and only place jeffersons that I find in circ or from rolls in my album. Any suggestions or ideas? Does this sound like a fun and good idea?

..... Of course ! .....

However, I chose to fill "folders" with circulated Jeffersons.
And I got the Dansco with Proofs to keep only the premium quality ones that I could afford in there.
I would go down and get all the Uncirc. Sets and Proof Sets from the coin shop....BREAK THOSE BABY'S OPEN ! And then put them in their home in the Dansco.
There's something about those SHINING EXAMPLES in a Dansco......I just could not get myself to put ANY "circulated" coins in there ! ...

But you will absolutely have an AWESOME time filling that album ! ...

Great idea IMHO .... I have the exact same goal and need 2 coins to complete ... after 238,400 nickels searched ... so have some patience.

FWIW ... my 'standards' for an album keeper are as follows ...

1938 through 1967 ... the 'best' circulated grade I can find.

1968 through 1986 ... AU-50 minimum

1987 to date ... MSFS only.

Sooo .. I need the 38-S and 43-D to 'plug all the holes' and 11 others as 'upgrades' to meet the criteria given above.

Believe me .... they look fabulous in my Dansco 7113 ... and each coin has cost me 5 cents.

Welcome to the search ... please share your finds with us in the nickel searching thread.

Great idea! I'm about to start the same quest(no proofs as well). Just sent for a Dansco and waiting for it to arrive.

Should be fun.

i was thinking about starting to collect circulated jeffersons also. I collect state and ATB Quarters, lincolns, and I have a 7070 dansco, but the jeffersons seem fun. but I would folder them, not put them in a dansco album.

I feel as if a folder ruins coins and its worth the extra 10-15$ on ebay to just buy a dansco to keep what you do get looking perty! Ill probably aim to search about 20 Rolls a week roughly as a college student. The problem is, everyone wants you to open an account with them to cash in your unrolled coins. Kinda sucks in my opinion. If anyone knows of a bank in cookeville that would not do that, please tell me lol. Ya, I am going to continue to replace the uglier looking coins with nicer versions I find. It is going to be strictly circulation except for the 1950D I ended up buying for a decent price.

I say I was fairly lucky ... turned up the two lowest mintage coins relatively early on ..

1939-D (3.5 million mintage) showed up at 57,600 coins searched
1950-D (2.6 million mintage) showed up at 99,200 coins searched

And to this day I have not found another one of either!

Soooo .... just to clarify ...

My Jefferson 1938 - 1961 are in a humble Whitman 9009 folder

My Jefferson 1962- Date are housed in my Dansco 7113

Someday when the set is complete ... upgrades and all ... I'll combine them all into the Dansco.

I really, really hate those Folders. That glue on the back of the slots really does a number on coins. Even if normal, everyday, non expensive coins, why ruin them now since someone in the future will want them.
Not sure if the banks by you will do this but I used to be able to buy a bag of Nickels from them. Amazing how you can almost fill an Album from one bag.

I also picked up a Dansco album. With the 50 dollars worth of nickels I've gone through, I've picked up a lot of fillers. Now I just need the album to come in.

I agree. No coin is unworthy of an album. All of my business strikes came from circulation and I have no problem keeping them in an album.

Yes, I will be going through quite a few Jefferson's to complete my set. The good thing is, that I can always replace coins when I find better condition ones. Will it take longer? Yes. Is it more exciting and fun? Yes. There just isn't that much of a thrill to go into a coin shop and drop 100$ on a coin rather than walking into a bank and paying 5c for a 100$ coin that you happened to get lucky in finding. I don't care what anyone says. There are still MANY people out there that dump great coins into circulation without a care in the world for them. The number of people who don't collect ENORMOUSLY outweigh those who do collect. So I say, more power to the people who roll search. It is not only fun, but sometimes very rewarding. Coin collecting is profitable, fun, and one of the greatest hobbies of all time. They are HISTORY, while collecting cardboard baseball cards is worth nothing more than the paper.

My comment above.... I didn't mean to take away from folks who put "circulated" coins into an "album".
I only meant that, for me, with some denominations, I REALLY like the idea of having the "creme de la creme" in my Dansco's, when and where I can.

I too, have "circulated coins" in many Dansco's !
It's just that with the Jeffersons in particular, one can easily afford to put REALLY nice grades in there, to be protected and housed adequately, and that they look SO NICE in there, that this too, becomes a passion and a thrill ! ....

I have the same thrill putting together folders from circulation. It's just that (with Jeffersons), most of the value is, and only ever will be "face value", or a little more. (except for the Silver War Jeffersons and the one key date).
You just simply CANNOT FIND, in the wild, high grade Proof or MS specimens......ever. Won't happen ! One CAN find the occasional "Proof", but it's impaired because of the circulation. And nice MS grades can be found too, in circulation, but in no way, can they ALL be found in the wild this way.

And so, I guess I just look at it as two different ways of collecting them.
I don't have a problem with putting circulated "face value" Nickels into a folder........ (or an album), and then the Proofs or high MS grades into an album......it's just that I choose to do BOTH ! .....
I want it ALL ! When it comes to my collection.
I don't want to limit my self, or hold myself into doing this, but not that, etc., etc., etc.. You know what I mean ?
And it's always operating under the concept of "within my budget" at that time. (Which changes from time to time !)

As long as you're having fun and "you" find your collection beautiful & rewarding .....that's alllllll that matters ! ...

(and whoever gets my circulated Jefferson "folder" after I'm dead and gone.....well, I'm sure they'll STILL be able to find most of them in circulation and they can decide to upgrade them that way if there's "folder crud" on them !.... .)

I knew what you meant. Everyone should feel free to follow their own style.

I just want people to know that is is okay to have an album worth more than the coins it contains, especially if that is what makes them happy. I know it made me happy (of course, adding the proof page lowered the album to coin price ratio).
