Ok here is a picture of a 1992 reverse and a picture of my 1996 reverse
and compare the spacing between the AM in both coins and why they are nearly identical. The worn AM pic is the 1996

I'm no expert, but from what I understand, on a true Wide AM coin, you also need to compare the spacing between the M and the E. On a true WAM, the space between the A-M and M-E should be about the same. From what I can see in your picture of the 96, it looks like the A, while not touching the M, is closer to it than the E is. This leads me to believe that it could be the corrosion of the coin, possibly combined with die wear, that is making the AM look wider than normal. But like I said, I'm no expert so we'll see what they say!

Thanks Dave, that is really helpful and I do agree. It was still worth the excitement though temporary

They are both "normal" for their dates.'96 is normally close and '92 is normally far.

The shape - the 'width' of the A of AMERICA is different between the two. The spacing in STATES is different between the two. The placement and shape of the designers initials is different between the two. It's not JUST in the spacing between the A and M.

The reason you are confused by this coin is the grime around the letters - if it weren't there, you would be able to see the lower relief area nearer the field and you would be able to see that the sides of the letters are actually beveled and get closer to one another as you get closer to the field. With the field all covered up by grime, the spacing looks wider than it actually is.
