I just purchased a 1955-1964 10 set lot of proofs still in the envelopes off of ebay. I received them today and the 1955 set does not look to me to be tampered with, but does not have the Philadelphia mint foil in te package. Every one I see has this in it. Do any of you know of any that do not have this item in it? I contacted the ebay seller and they said the 1955 did not come with the foil, but I see it in every other set. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Steve

Proof set from 1955 only came with one coin pack in the package. Penny, nickle, dime, half. no mint mark on coins. Tracy

He's talking about the octagonal silver foil label that has the mint's info on it...not how many coins there are in the set.
I have seen these things fall out of sets, and I have seen sets that don't have them. I'm not sure whether 1955 even had them. on't remember right off hand, and don't have a 55 proof set available to me. I do know that 1956 had them.

1955 Proof sets came in two ways... the "flat pack" and in a small box. The earlier proof sets came in a box about 2X2 square with each coin in a single pouch. 1955 came both ways, and are priced differently. With that said, if you have the "flat pack", it SHOULD have the foil seal.

Thank you guys. The flat pack doesn't seem to be tampered with, but I am new to coin collecting and I am sure there are ways to do anything. I just thought that if someone could remove that, they could have also removed coins and changed them out. Every other 1955 I have seen has the foil seal inside. I checked all listings on ebay and checked pics on the web. I contacted the seller and he said he has another and would gladly swap them out for me. It seems to be a big and reputable seller on ebay...

another concern I had was that in all the other proof sets, the foil seal is under the penny and the quarter under the nickle. In this set, the quarter is under the penny and the empty spot for the foil seal is under the nickle. here is the set

I don't know, but if it came from the mint that way, I think it's kinda cool. I'd keep it. You still got all the coins.

Well you have a point there. I don't know if somebody could reseal coins in this kind of package or not.
Maybe somebody here does.

Yeah, I'd bet that's been tampered with...

Sometimes things are missing from the sets.. I have one that has the nickel missing, and have seen pictures of another (I think that one was missing the quarter). So, it's entirely possible it was just a packaging accident.

It's "nickel" - not "nickle"
And I don't believe there was a hard and fast rule about the position of each coin in the set...and the foil didn't make it into some sets. While a packaging error, it doesn't add anything to the value of the set.
