After I first became ill, my doctor recommended that I start walking. I am up to 3-6 miles a day, now. But my issue is ROAD money. When walking I always pick up stray change I find along the edge of the road and I wondered if anyone else did that. I put my "finds" in 2x2 holders with dates and locations. I gave up putting pennies in 2x2s because I have several rolls of them. My oddest find so far would be a Spanish Peseta (1957) that I found on a street in my former home town of New Bedford, Massachusetts. I have also found paper money, silver coins and one coin over 150 years old. Am I a nut - or does anyone else do this?

swamperbob, That's really an interesting thing to do. I pick up any coins I happen to see, but never thought about saving them.
I can't remember ever finding anything really unusual. Best find was a $5 bill.

The oddest thing I ever found was an elongnated cent of Scobby-Doo/Universal Studios. But I found it on the floor of a 24 Hour Laundry Mat.

Hi Swamperbob,i love the fact that you give the coins you find a little back ground history by putting the date and location of yuor find . My best find ever was a fifty dollar note but I had never thought of doing what you do!

Swamperbob, I say this in the nicest possible way...It's all right to be a nut. LOL. The coins I find along the paths I walk are usually "Road Kill". Coins with more scratch and dents than you'll fine in a car panel beaters shop. I usually put them in the pile to be taken to the bank.
I do collect evey foreign coin that I have ever received in change, put them in a 2x2, and add them to my collection. Although, Your Spanish Peseta would hold "Pride of Place" in my collection regardless of it's condition. LOL.
My odd finds in change would come from New Zealand, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, and Singapore. I have found a USA quarter in a roll of $1 coins I received from the bank. (that was one expensing quarter).

We have several customers at the bank who are meter readers for the gas company, and they do the same thing you do. They pick up all the coins they find out on their routes, and it adds up to a pretty sizable sum! One guy brings his in about once a year and it's usually about $500 or so, not bad if you ask me! Only problem is, most of the coins they bring in are so scuzzy from being outside that we have a hard time getting them to go through the coin counter. Rachel

toast - I agree that the coins from the road are ROAD KILL - I have gotten several that were completely ONE SIDED - the other side being completely scratched away. Some flip over so both sides are destroyed. But they do have character. Even the Peseta has deep gouges on one side while the other side is near MS. Here in the US I typically find Canadian, Bermuda and Bahamas coins rather regularly. I once found a 1904 Panama 10 Centavo in a roll of quarters - but that was in 1963 when silver quarters were still circulating. grouse12 - the largest bill I have ever found was a $20 US which I guess must be fairly close to your $50 NZ. When I got home I told my wife and it was gone in a heart beat. I did find 4- $20 bills folded together in a dumpster one time. But that was when I was working as a janitor - years and years ago. I have found a few other bills on my walks recently but my favorite is a bleached out $1 bill that is nearly totally white. It must have been in the ditch for a year or two before I found it. It had been run over by the roadside lawnmower and was cut in two but I found both pieces about 10 yards apart. I can't imagine how many people passed that spot before me but no one ever saw it. longnine009 - I have only found one elongated penny in the four plus years I have been walking - a souvenier from the Statue of Liberty in New York. It was also scratched but not too badly. Gary Burke - I have never ever passed up any coin on the street and I always used to spend them whenever possible. I did save really odd ones. I found a Half Dime dated 1854 on a dirt lot when I was about 10. I was kicking along in the dirt and out it popped. That was a real find back then. I also found a 1904 V nickel when I was about 12 - that one had only one side. It was half buried face down in a dirt pathway. The reverse was worn off and it looked like a slug, but I picked it up anyway and was surprised to find the obverse of an AG 5 cent piece with a clear date.

I never pass up a coin on the ground. However, I have never found anything of much interest, aside from some one's 10 yr. AA token that was about the size of a Kennedy half. It was in a church parking lot so I turned it in with the hopes that the individual came back for it.

I used to work at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford and walk the neighborhood during lunch-break. Lots of huge old Victorian homes, never found a cent.
Believe it or not I have found several dollars while walking on the beach. Probably about $50 or in the last 20 years. The best find I ever had was a 1953 $5 silver certificate. It looks like is has blood on it...made me think of Jaws.

I just found a $10 bill at the gas station yesterday. I kinda look at it as a refund for the rediculous gas prices!

I keep every coin or bill I find on the ground. I spend them mostly or put them in my change to be deposited at the bank every year or so. I am always looking down, people might think I'm depressed but not, I am merely looking for coins. LOL.

I usually never pass up road money either. Most unusual find for me was about 6 months back, a 1960 sixpence covered in some sticky black stuff, was on a footpath against a wall. Dropped it in some vinegar at home for 5 minutes and wiped it down and out popped an AU coin.

Hi Jim, when I found the note I was young and foolish and had no bills so it went into my cd collection!! I have found several wallets over the years but every one has been returned to the owners FULLY intact as should always be the case!
