I just picked up a nice 20 cent piece in a PCGS slab. First, anybody want to try grading it? Sorry my photo skills leave a lot to be desired, and it's hard getting a good angle through plastic.

But my main question is more of an opinion poll. Should I crack it, or not? If I crack it, it's going in my Dansco type album. But although most of my type coins are better in the details, they are all "problem" coins that would never slab. So maybe I should "trade up" for one that has better details but is maybe cleaned. In that case, I would not want to crack it, so as to keep its tradeability value.

If you are not sure if you want to keep it, I would definitely keep it in the slab. You will get more money or value for it if you try to sell or trade it in the future.

personally I would just keep it in the slab but have a sling inside the 7070 to place it as there's really no point in cracking it out as if you due decide to sell it, whos going to believe/buy it for what it was graded for not knowing if that is really the coin that was in the slab.

I have cracked quite a few coins for my type album but I never had any intentions on selling any of them, if you are not sure you are going to keep it I would probably keep it in the slab. The ones I purchased I did so for the album so I knew they were going to be cracked out when I purchased them

In terms of grade, I would guess it to be somewhere between XF-45 and AU-53. It's a nice coin and they are tough to find - especially with the full Liberty - that's almost always an automatic XF it seems.

I cracked a PCGS XF-45 for my 7070, but similar to Bryan, I bought it with the intention of keeping it. If you don't think this is THE coin or THE RIGHT COIN for your 7070, then I'd keep it slabbed.

I agree with an XF-45 to AU-50 grade for this attractive coin. I also would keep it in the slab. If you really want one for the album I'd suggest buying a raw coin. You can find an attractive F-12 or so for less than $150. If you are willing to accept cleaning or other problems for an album example you could get a higher grade for a similar price or pay less for a similar level of detail.

AU. It really depends if you definitely want it for your album, as others have said.

Thanks for the replies. First, it is an AU-53.

I think I'll keep it slabbed. If the actual grade is higher than what yall think, then it has reached its "Peter Principle" level and probably should stay in the slab.

It's hard to find an original un-messed-with one anymore. For some reason 20 centers don't seem to tone well, and people like to strip them.

I think I should be able to find one that's been cleaned, that is maybe a 58 or even unc details. Hopefully I can trade even for it.
Rest in Peace

I would have guessed AU-55 as the grade. It has plenty of luster and nice eye appeal. I dont think it would ever slab less than 53, just my personal opinion.

I guessed AU-50 before scrolling down and seeing the PCGS grade. I was going to say if PCGS graded this coin as XF, I'd crack it out. Given the AU-53 grade, I'd vote to keep it slabbed. Nice acquisition!

Crack it like a clam!

(That's the only way it'll fit in the 7070...)

I thought AU-50 as well. Looks like 53 is good enough to keep it in the slab. That's a valuable coin and you might be better off putting a not so nice example in your album. My $.02
