Hmm...I suspect the obverse was etched by a chemical reaction, bringing out the "grain" and direction of the alloy. The fields look too rough to be struck that way.
Yep, that would be the grain of the metal which is typically only seen on a delaminated coin or split planchet but neither is the case here. I would have to concur with DVC that something etched the surface to bring out the grain.
I would suspect it was in a stream or something that had slightly acidic water flowing through it. The back shows general overall etching while the obverse shows a lateral etching from the flow over it.
