Then I think its a contemporary counterfeit, maybe made as a novelty piece long ago.

I don't think it's counterfeit. It's a mistake that was made. Probably worth quite a bit. I just need to find more facts about when they were first minted. Hey, many mistakes were are made when coins are first developed. Like I said before, it's been in my family for over 70 years. Thanks for the input though.

There were counterfeits of many coins that were made back in the 1800's. The most commonly counterfeited coins were half dollars, it seems. There's even a recent book that's been written about contemporary counterfeit Bust Halves. Indeed, I'll dig through some of my coins and see if I can post some pics of contemporary counterfeits on this thread; this, that you may see such "coins" for yourself. For your sake and that of the collecting community at large, I sincerely would like to see you prove the majority of opinions here incorrect. Certification by PCGS or NGC would do that. It should be noted though that the PCGS previously certified many micro-O Morgan dollars that were later proven to be contemporary counterfeits which were likely made 100 years ago. In the lottery business, the old saying is all you need is a dollar and a dream. Certification will run you about $30-$40. I'm sure that a number of us here on the CCF would love to see how this pans out. Good luck!

First off, welcome to the forum gdlovgren! I hope you stay for a while! Second off, unfortunately I am quite certain that this coin is not genuine. Quote: I think it's either a mis-strike from the mint from an original bad run. Could and has happened. I've never heard of a US minted coin accidentally minted a date before the coin type existed? They have had overdates, in which the previous date is still visible(1918/7-s quarter), and filled dies which erase a mm(1922 no d lincoln)...but this is different. The mint would not have even used a "zero" for the barber half under any circumstance until 1900. The only time I can see a coin struck with an earlier date is with a pattern piece. I agree with exoguy on his comments of the date. Compare yours to this genuine 1892 barber half date:

It's a replica of a Barber Half that someone messed up the date on.
No half dollars were struck in San Francisco in 1890 and that type didn't start on any coin until 1892.

That's possible too, though its done pretty well. It'd be cool if it were real, but the design itself is off. Subtly, but off nonetheless.

Here is a closer look at the "liberty" and the "date" for your examination.

IN GOD WET RUST is obviously bad. I'd say complete fantasy, as opposed to altered date.

Here is another set of semi-close ups for you all to examine. Different lighting, same camera. Looks more real, doesn't it?

this coin is altered or counterfeit, there's no way the coin could have the wrong date.
yes, mistakes happen, but the date cant be wrong, more would have shown up even if it was an error(which it is not)
and I also have a question, how can you assume it has a lot of value?
the only value it has is the possibility of silver. other than that, novelty.

I agree with everyone here. But you seem pretty much set on believing it's genuine. So send it in to PCGS or NGC and see what they have to say. Then come back and let us know what happens. That'll put this issue to rest.
