Henry Clay was a Whig who ran for President three separate times: 1824, 1832, and 1844. Obviously, all three of his campaigns ended in failure. In addition to his candidacy for President, Clay served in both the House and Senate, as well as Secretary of State.

Interestingly, Clay was younger than the Constitutionally mandated age requirement of 30 years when he was first elected as a Senator. However, his ineligibility was overlooked. It wasn't until 3 months and 17 days elapsed as senator did Clay attain the the age of eligibility. This situation has only occurred two other times to senators in U.S. history! Indeed, the current Vice President, Joe Biden, was also elected when he was 29 years old. But in Joe's case, he had turned 30 by the time he was sworn-in.

In addition to his political career, Clay was also a bit of a dirt bag. One of his slaves by the name of Charlotte Dupuy sued him to attain her freedom and also her two children. Dupuy asserted her freedom based on a promise given by her previous owner; Clay reneged by not honoring the promise. The jury in the case ruled in Clay's favor, and determined that the promise provided by her previous owner was not valid with Clay. It wasn't until years thereafter that Dupuy and her children were granted their freedom, eventually by Clay.

Pictured below is a Henry Clay token from my cabinet. Rulau lists multiple varieties for this token, varying in both reverse text as well as obverse bust. From the looks of it, the die sinker / engraver took a bit of artistic freedom with Clay's bust, based on Clay's mug above.

I estimate this token to be approximately VF in grade.

Thanks,

Another great post! Clay makes most of today's politicians look more like preachers, eh what? He was a slave owner, yet this medalet portrays Clay as "The Noble and Patriotic Supporter of the Peoples' Rights!"

Thanks. And indeed, his motto is quite hypocritical.
