I just bought 8 SLQs on one auction (top picture), with one being a type 1 (second coin from left, top row). I realize the picture is not so great, but when I blew up the coin in question (second picture), it APPEARS (to me anyway) to have chracteristics of a 1916 SLQ. Thoughts? Comments?

I hope it is a 16 Moe. The robe gives me an idea that you are right, but the photo just isn't good enough for me to be sure. I would give you a 75% chance for a 16.

ok I'm no expert but I remember looking at diagnostics of these coins and IMHO, there seems to be too much detail in the bulk head square lines and the shield rivets. thats just me,,

Quote: there seems to be too much detail in the bulk head square lines That's true... Usually the '16 SLQ is pretty weak there... This one seems pretty strong... But I don't see any strong rivets, just a shadow, so I'm still a little optimistic. The main thing I was seeing was the fold of the robe seems much more compressed than the robe of the '17. It'll get here in a few days and we'll see! (I do have my fingers crossed!)

I think I understand what your seeing Moe, but I'm almost certain it's a 17. I'm sorry for being a killjoy. As SDcoinguy said, a 1916 has excuse square lines on the bulkhead, so being susceptible to wear, they almost disappear on the 1916 whereas on the 1917, they are incuse and show sharp detail in lower grades. Also the stars are strongly struck and the upper curve of the shield looks too detailed. The rest of it is kind of fuzzy to me, as the hair looks like it "could" be right and the robe crease below her right arm looks to almost extend down to the top of the bulkhead(though it should be strongest right before it goes behind the wall). The robe fold at her right foot looks like a 17 to me. There definitely are characteristics that make it debatable...and we MUST have closeups when you get it. , but this has the overall look of a 17 to me. I HOPE you keep looking Moe, they are definitely out there and there is sure to be one with your name on it! Here's a refresher for diagnostics, look at the bulkhead square lines. and here are 4 1916s certified by ANACS with varying detail levels, but you can note the strike characteristics of the square and stars on the wall for each of them.

I knew the walls & stars were weak on the '16s but I don't think I ever knew why! I assumed it was a weaker strike. NOW I know! I'm smarter now!

From what I have read, they created the 1916 die early in 1916. However, they didn't use the die to mint the coins until December of that year, so the dies had been sitting around and rusting for a while. As a result, they had to polish the die and therefore removed a lot of the finer details, which resulted in weaker shield rivets, stars etc... They only minted 1916 quarters for 2 weeks in december before starting with a fresh 1917 die, which is why the limited mintage. Both 1916 and 1917 were both released into circulation at the same time.

Looks more like a 16 than some dated ones I've seen on ebay.

the head is not in the right place. Not a 1916, IMO.
