One of the things I am rolling around is building a set of 1964-present either from mint sets or using just proofs. I expect the proofs would be the more expensive of the two, but I really like the Jefferson design when executed as a proof. Some of the mint set business strikes are really nice, but others...
So, has anybody else done this? If possible I'd like to hear from both MS and proof set builders, what obstacles you encountered, costs incurred, etc.
Thanks in advance!

I dont have the nicest set of Jeffersons, but I am still collecting them. I started with 1938 and worked forward. I've found that most of the modern coins are not expensive (unless you get MS67 slabbed FS coins). If you can find coins with full steps - that's the way to go in my opinion. But if that's not what you feel like doing and just want to get the set completed, you can probably get some nice ones from the mint sets. There are a few years with soft strikes, but I don't have my book in front of me to tell you what those years are.

I don't understand why you're starting with 1964 ? .....

Might as well make it a full set IMO...

I have almost finished a "circulated" Jefferson Set "folder".

And I am building my Dansco Jefferson with Proofs album (8113), which goes right up to 2012 or so.
I purchased most of the Proof and Mint Sets from around 1960 to 2011 to build it thus far.
The older Proof and Mint Sets are REALLY REALLY cheap, and it's quite easy to acquire these from your local coin shop.
The empty holes I have remaining, are the earliest Jeffersonsj, which I'll buy individually and be very selectful on which ones I'll get to put into the Dansco.

Most people start a set using the circulating coins and later expand into adding which proofs they can afford to it. I agree with eaglefoot asking why start with 1964. ?

Im right in the middle of putting together a 1938-1964 BU Toned Set. Only have 18 more to go. No problems so far, coming right along with it. Having a lot of fun hunting for what I need.

He is building the set from either mint or proof sets. Given the prices, I would think that 1968 would be a better starting point.

Actually, my plan to start in 1964 is inspired by the fact that I was minted in 1964.
I am building a set just from circulation (starting in '38 of course) that is nearly complete, and thought I should build a really nice set. Some of the coins from circulation are, well, pretty rugged, the whole idea being to build a complete year/mint set from circulation only fudging on 1950D and maybe a couple silver content, but I wound up finding most of those anyway.

Yes, I've found some of the 60's/70's proof coins are actually cheaper than AU/BU unc ones. Odd , but that's collecting I guess.

I presently have 4 sets from 38 to present and 4 from 38 to 64.
The 38 to 64 are in the first Whitman Albums with non remmvable or expandable pages so that is the end of thoes. The 4 from 38 to present all include all proofs and is slowing getting to the point of no more room. Might want to try adding one more page if it fits.
I also have a page in a Proof only Album with many, not ocmplete, proofs of Jefferson nickels.
Any time an Album is filled I usually start a new one but with Jefferson nickels, I have little interest in expanding the amount of Albums.
