I'm no pro but I think it has to do with a clear mint mark and a filled in looking mint mark. A pro will chime in soon.

John1 is correct, but I don't have any pictures for you. The S is very distinct on the type II (clear), on the type I (filled)it is kind of filled in.

The type 1 is the filled mint mark.
The type 2 is the clear mint mark.
Sorry no images for this one.

Here is a type 2 mintmark for the nickel. Just happen to have it on file. The type one nickel is put away so no picture of that one. Sorry.

The price difference is very minimal. So both must be fairly common on the nickel.

Thanks again guys for the input.

I've been going through nickel boxes for about the last two weeks. It's funny how I can look through $200.00 in Nickels and not find certain dates that I need. Then in one box, same roll, find two.

Still looking for 62 dates to complete my 1938-Date collection! Most all that I need are the 1971-2010 S-mint

The mintmark syles for both 1979 and 1981 proof coins are the same with respect to all denominations. The same punches were used on all US coins at that time. In other words, the 1979S type 1 mintmark is the same for cents, nickels, dimes, quarters, etc...and the type 2 is the same for all of them too.
