Counterfeit Australia 1946 Penny In Fake PCGS Slab

I am aware of the verification codes, what concerns me is the ongoing improvement in fake slabs themselves. I am worried that someone may have, as an example a 1946 penny and have advertised it For Sale. Now the culprits have an authentic cert number to work with, if they now put a lesser coin in a fake holder the number will correspond. To correctly show a 1946 Penny in the original grade.

Now of course if you can view the coin in person or with good photos you can then make your own assessment, and decide if you agree or disagree with the grading.

With a lot of auction sites the pictures are not high enough resolution to get these details. So the next best thing is to look for indicators on the actual slabs themselves.

Things such as the Font and placement of the Blue Card. Some I am seeing have the Year (TLC) Denomination (TRC)description in the middle and finally a barcode at the bottom. On closer inspection I am seeing some discrepancy with the description, varied from being in the middle and have some space, to others being almost touching the base of the Year (TLC) So is there a standard placement etc...

I am going to look over some known good slabs (Hope So) to see what I can identify. I am thinking this issue is going to get a lot worst before it gets any better.

Appreciate any tips fellow collectors can add.

The 1946 penny is the 3rd best penny (im sure, not sure if 32/21 overdate is better) anyway maybe you should make a thread on all your coins so experienced members can grade/value them, thanks

The 6 is horrible. *** Edited by Staff - This is a family friendly forum *** The coin is also upset to about 1:00/1:30. You don't really see any upset 1946 pennies. The A's are also a definite give-away, but in many cases a lot of people will believe that it's genuine because it is slabbed...that's the problem especially in on-line sales. People don't take decent photo's. It's even worse with banknotes. Throw a banknote in a scanner & miraculously many creases seem to vanish. It's all about high quality macro images or I won't bid. You can't trust a lot of the sellers on ebay.

Looks like a modern Chinese fake to me. Have seen similar pictures in a recent edition of the
Australiasian Coin & Banknote Magazine.

Hi All, I'm new here. I'm reviving this topic as I stumbled upon it as I was researching a 1946 coin I bought on ebay 2 days ago. Its exactly the same coin that WWWWW said he sold for $7500 in 2010. I bought it for $1270. I cant email WWWWW. So I'm hoping I would be contacted by him. Just wondering why it sold for so much 8 years ago.

nealeffendi....thank you very much for your reply. I will shoot him an email. I wonder if its the way the mint has been pumping out meaningless coins in the last few decades that has influenced the prices in the collector market. Shame really.
