Looks like an overpolished die. Same effect that caused the 3-legged Buffalo.

Wild Bill...I'm gonna wake you at 2:00 am next time I find one of these !
I kind of agree with the over polished die theory but wonder why another hasn't appeared with the 97's being looked at for double ears. Also notice how it is squared off at the collar...that seems a bit strange.I need a good name for this one if it is to be marketable.

There has only been one to your knowledge because thousands have been seen and tossed back because it isn't anything valuable or collectible.

I agree with that to a point...but all the guys on here have pointed out a lot less.....or it was a filled die, which would account for fewer examples

Then I could change my number to a hundred might have been seen and tossed back. Point being, many people who might actually notice this anomaly would be the experienced searchers who might know that it's die overpolishing and would not keep/send/list it - thus you've never seen or heard of another one. That's my only point...not to desparage your knowledge or reasoning in posting it here.

Quote: many people who might actually notice this anomaly would be the experienced searchers No, I actually would take that as a compliment.I already know I'm not an expert so that's not a problem either..you're talking to a guy that came home from an architectural office to restore panheads and camaros, or cutting firewood and fishing bass tournamenst on the weekends.Jack of all trades, master of none, but lovin it just the same.

I guess the term 'expert' is one that I have always been uncomfortable with - it makes me cringe to have people call me that, and to wait for my answer because that's what they think I am. I just studied this stuff until I knew what I was doing, and share that knowledge with others. That simply makes me knowledgable and selfless...I don't think it makes me an expert.

I do know the feeling and as long as we maintain that attitude, we become even more knowledgeable. You may as well get used to the term though. There are those who claim the title without earning it..better that somebody that earned ,uses it.Save the cringing for when I tell people I'm an expert
