I examined my roll of 1960D Small Date LMC's and found some interesting stuff. There is quite a bit of Die Deterioration Doubling . . . I think. Please take a look and let me know if you disagree. I also found quite a few die chips on the obverse, but most on the reverse.

Please feel free to share any comments or observations you may have.

The coin is just a small date. In order to have an overdate with the large and small date you have to have a large date on the coin. There is only a small date here. Die chips are very common in thisa time period as you found out in this roll.

What pyrbob said plus there's no Die Deterioration Doubling on that coin. The die is not deteriorated to the point to have Die Deterioration Doubling.

I think what is seen here as doubling is the effects of the lighting in the photo. It looks like the light was to the side instead of over the coin and then it can mislead you into seeing doubling.

I have to disagree, pyrbob. These are scans, not pics. So, the ligting comes from below. Plus, I can clearly see the doubling with my loupe. I didn't make the claim that these coins are DDO, but there is some kind of common doubling going on with most of the coins in this roll.

Regardless of how you captured the photo, look at the zero in the date. You can see the light on the top of it and a shadow at the bottom of it. So the light was not directly over (or in this case, under) the coin. But I have to admit, there does looks like some Machine Doubling on the coin for instance inside the zero. Chuck is much better at this than I am so hopefully he will chime back in.

I am looking at what appears to be the effect of lighting, but if it is any doubling of any sort, it is Machine Doubling...which incidentally is more encompassing than Strike Doubling, something like 'vehicle' is more encompassing than 'car' which in itself is more encompassing than 'Toyota Camry.'

The reason why I prefer to use ' Machine Doubling' over ' Strike Doubling' is because the term ' Machine Doubling' simply means that there was some sort of doubling that occurred as a direct result of the process of striking the coin, whereas ' Strike Doubling' is a specific form of Machine Doubling that takes close examination to determine specifically over die chatter, and eject doubling...which both also fall under ' Machine Doubling'.
