hey all, wondering if anyone else has seen this error coin. I found a link that mentions this type of error, where the letters are bleeding to the rim, among other oddities on the obverse of the coin.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dime_(Canadian_coin)

here are some pics...sorry for not including all the coin, but just highlighting the main error.

Interesting coin.

Your wikipedia link says:
Quote:
A small number of volunteer coins were accidentally issued with a die break error, causing the lettering to bleed into the reeded edge of the coin.

I'm not seeing how the two are related.

I like the bleeding letters! The fat and distorted letters are from Die Deterioration on the surface of the die and not a "die break" (die crack) error.

The rim damage & rust is also a bit distracting - I'd clean it off.

Cool find, I'll have to search for this variety.

Try to find one without the bleed!

I've been through tons of these and found the same defect. I understand this was the result of some variation to the minting process (or the materials used) that caused this.

Another theory was Die Deterioration.

I wouldn't consider this an error.

Does anyone have the thread that discusses this?

I recall now that it was a plating issue.

Here's one thread about this:

I'll have to check to see if I still have mine. Now with the loupe I should be able to see it better and see if there's raised metal bleeding from the letters too. Will get back to you if I still have 'em

Wow, thanks cryslee83, I totally missed the first posting on this. It does seem to affect a large number of coins. Here is a pic of mine.

Ah shucks! I found two of the dimes I have with the die bleeds, unfortunately (Scoooby!) they don't have the dramatic metal bleeds too. Just looks like missing plating bleed effects, no metal trails methinks. Darn. I was excited to think I finally had something you might like as a given from me to add to your "some day" package from me.

PS: I'm guessing that my two dimes happened during the earlier stages of Die Deterioration, so not as dramatic effects to letters and bleeds like the photo posted above.

Just got home and checked the only one I have. Mine has very small crack-looking like "trails" coming off of some of the letters, but not all of them. And certainly nothing like the one ikandiggit posted.

I do recall seeing them the first time I looked at the coin but just thought they were several die cracks. Must be an earlier die state or a die that somehow survived the majority of the above issues.

If they are plentiful and someone has an example like the one ikandiggit posted, I'd love to trade or buy it for closer examination. Even if it is just deterioration and common, I still think it's an interesting piece.

Thanks for the offer Ugly! I don't really need a couple rolls, just a couple/few examples.

I remember seeing the "cracks" coming off both of the "1's" heading toward the rim, but didn't realize how much of this effect my coin had until now. Still not as extreme as above.

Me too! Especially one like ikandiggit's.

I think I should have some Aussie coins that have a similar effect, but not as evident as ikandiggit's. I'll try & find them. If I do find them, I'd love to do a swap.

Wahhh! I already have one but the bleeding is quite smudged and is also on the Rev. Here are some combined scans.

If I can find my similar Aussie coins, I'd still like to do a swap as the above coin is going into my 'Errors' album, so I'll have a new gap to fill in my Canada 10ยข.
