Since there's several post about cleaning coins, here's another one.

It's almost completely covered in sand. Advice on what to do with it is appreciated.

I'd start with multiple baths and soaks, see what loosens up.

Try to get an idea about what metal it is and then based on that you could choose the chemical to use in the soaks and baths.

Than you. I guess it is impossible to identify the coin in this condition. The top picture looks like a man and there's some letters going downwards on the right side, Greek letters?

I also think it's a silver coin

It's not silver. Uncleaned silver coins don't generally look this bad. It will be bronze.

And yes, it's Greek. To the right of the standing figure is the word "BASILEOS" in Greek letters, meaning "king". This dates it very roughly to the period 300-1 BC, but unfortunately it doesn't help in identifying it any further, as practically every bronze coin in that period named the king. There will be another word to the left, the king's actual name, which is unreadable in your pic.

I'd suggest go easy on the cleaning, at least at first. This kind of sandy "desert patina" is highly sought after among ancients collectors; the coin will be more valuable if as much of it is left on as possible. The general rule is to clean coins up until the point at which the coin can be positively identified. This coin hasn't quite reached that stage yet.

So I'll put it in water for a couple of days, and try to gently brush away the sand?
Rest in Peace
