I was going through my 'junk' silver to get it ready for sale (buying a house and need cash) when I came across this 1918 S. I didnt know it was an S at first due to the grime and got really excited because of the jump in value from very fine to extremely fine for the 1918. Nevertheless, even as an s mint I see some price jumps in the extra fine grades. Problem is, I don't grade these very well and it is really hard to grade with the grime. What does everyone think regarding grade? Should this coin be dipped? Should it be sent for grading? All input and comments are welcome! Thanks!   Edited by captainkurt

In my opinion, the reverse hits XF easily... It's the obverse that has me scratchin my head, but I think that comes down to the detail on the dress, and I can't quite make it out... But I'm no expert though...  |

FYI - believe that's a "Walking Liberty" Half. "Standing Liberty" was on quarters 1917-1930.

whoops! shows my little knowledge of these things. walking, standing, didn't even think to differentiate.
P.S. - notice the small rim nick at 7 o'clock of the obverse.
how will that effect grade?
and should this be dipped or graded?

It is a nice valuable XF45 walker IMO.
The toning is not attractive and I might consider an acetone bath but
I do not have any first hand expierence with that yet. A lot of people would dip it,
but not me.

EF-45 with some serious crustiness going on. Some people are into that though, so don't do anything rash like dip or clean it. Might be worth a trip to a TPG, I could see it maybe going AU-50? |

I'd call it EF-40 based on the obverse although I'd agree the reverse looks to go better than that. Does it look corrosive to you? When you have "baked on" grime like that, that's always a consideration. I actually like the coin, I have a '43 in the same condition. I'm sure many others wouldn't like it, though. I keep mine in that condition it came to me in, FWIW.

EF-40 sounds right this is a valuable coin so please don't dip it you'll cut the value in half (!)

Thanks everyone! The look has actually grown on me. I don't think I see any corrosive stuff going on so I'd say it's a keeper!
