Poll Question
This may have been discussed before, but I don't recall seeing it.
Canada (as well as other mints) have been putting out colorized coins in the recent past. What if our mint follows suit?
The purist in me cringes. I've grown to learn that's damage. But, that's also because its being done post mint. What if they started coming from our mints that way?
What if popularity up north (if there is any) catches their eye and they see a chance to exploit another market? How would we feel about that?
Would we buy them and cringe? Would we cringe and not buy them? Or would we just accept (maybe even embrace) the fact and continue on with our collections?
The handful of colorized Canadian coins that I have just seem cheap. No offense to our brothers and sister up north. I enjoy the coins and their designs. But, I'll bet they have their fair share of collectors that cringed, too. Maybe if I seen a pristine example that looks like it's meant to be, maybe it would change my mind.
Side thought: What if they went out of their satin minds on us and started throwing them in mint sets half way through the National Parks program?

I'd cringe. I think they are novelties. I know proof coins and others aren't intended for circulation, but I can accept those. If I found a colorized coin in circulation, It'd be junk.

IMO I think there are too many purist collectors here in the states... I'm not trying to downgrade anything that is going on up North, they have many absolutely stunning designs on their coinage. But America is a different type of market. It would take decades to progress this into the American Psyche, if it would even work. But they don't have the time, $, or resources to do that. So for that, I'm pretty sure the purists are safe... for at least a good while longer...

Are colored Canadian coins in circulation, or are they primarily proof/set coins?
In the US, they could inspire many people to start collecting. On the other hand, that would add to the production costs.
Consider this, if the mint produces $50,000 in colored coins and half of those are saved in collections, that's basically giving the government a loan of $25,000 that may or may not ever need "paid" in monetary value to the public.

cringe and not buy for me too..... My albums/folders would just "stop" where they were.....happily. I would then become a strictly "Classic" coin collector, starting with THAT particular year, and never go beyond. No more Ultra Moderns, if it happens, that WOULD be the final straw from my viewpoint. I'd also just appreciate more of what I have.....and start really focusing on the "old" Classics..... the "medium realm" Classics....and what would THEN be..... the "Modern Classics"...... OHH ! GOOD GRIEF !! ....... I'm GOIN' TO BED NOW ! .....

Me Canadian I think I'd like our coins better if the metal were actually coloured, but instead the color looks like plastic stickers applied to the coins and to me they do look, well, a bit tacky I personally prefer pure metal and think color would be very cool IF it was the metal itself. Applied TO the coin, and the quality of what they apply, kind of puts me off. People do collect them as far as I know. Maybe just because they're there? For the record, I don't know if colorized coins were ever released to general circulating change, but I do find them in change or rolls.

The only good thing I can see coming from this is that it "might" bring more new collectors to our hobby.IMHO John1

It would do damage to the hobby much as the usps has killed modern stamp collecting.

They'd probably sell, but not well and would most likely be dropped in a year or two. Honestly, I don't know why the mint hasn't started offering these yet.

Cringe and not buy them
I will never, ever, ever buy a colourized coin. Never. They have no place in my world.
I doubt our mint would ever do it, but do not hold me to that.

Your kidding of course. Look what the government did with US Postage stamps. From movie stars, everything that ever moved and even if you submit and pay for, your own picture on one. Our Mint has already well started on their way to doing that and more. The State Quarters, Bicentennial Quarters, Westward Jounerey Nickels, 20 different 2009 Lincoln Cents, All sorts of baby sized dollar coins that no one wants and more commemoratives than can be cataloged. With so many private companies already doing coloring of coins and the DO SELL on TV, our Mint surely will join in soon.

Quote: Your kidding of course. No, I am not. Why would they spend the effort to install and learn a new process when they can just keep doing what they are doing with all the different designs and commemorative issues? Again, I could be wrong, but I personally doubt they would ever go there. My reasoning is that the after-market companies would be competing with them. There would be a whole controversy about "counterfeits" and our lawsuit-happy society would make it a bigger mess. Yeah, I say, no chance they every do it.
