Well it would depend on your point of view. I have purchased one, and only one in my entire life and that was the 1oz love thingy silver round the Aussie mint put out earlier this year. It was for the wife as a 25th anniversary gift. Best money I ever spent.

Alot of them make me cringe and want to run away. But a very select few, actually don't look too bad. I guess it would depend on the design and how it looked

There are three I've "liked" so far , the first being the four dollar dinosaur coins... but they are toned at the mint, not coloured with dye. The second is the Canadian flag five dollar round... but it's hard to screw up RED. The final one I can honestly say I don't like as a coin, but I do like the gesture and it's the pink breast cancer awareness ribbon on a quarter, because it's so simple, it's not horrible.
The one I wished I liked and hated is the poppy quarter, it looks cheap and the cause of remembrance should not be cheap. I wish they hadn't done it that way and just left it without colour instead.
The rest of the coloured stuff seems like pure trash.... those birds on the oversized 25 cent pieces make me shudder as I recall my four colour dot matrix ribbon in the 80's doing about the same quality.
Anyhow, I hope you guys stay "clean" down south. Someone needs to hold the line on this marketing insanity.

Resist, it starts with a bit of red and devolves into this, it even infects some circulation coins

Quote: marketing insanity Well there it is! Although I can see how a Dino would appeal to a 7 year old boy.

Cringe and not buy them. Something about the look just makes it seem like a novelty to me.

I bet you'll end up with them, and have them in circulation in a few years, just like we never have a choice.

One major dealer pays the same for enameled, antiqued, or gold plated 999 items as he does for sterling, which is 32% less than his "clean" 999 buy price.

The only good thing I can see coming from this is that it "might" bring more new collectors to our hobby.IMHO The problem is, if they don't maintain or improve their value, those new collectors only last until they are told that their $100 coin purchase is now only worth $20. It's almost impossible to convert such a buyer into a serious collector after an experience that "coins are a ripoff".

I think a lot of it depends on the marketing, the numbers minted, and how well they hold up.
-Anything marketed as a collectible is going to sour new collectors, as anything specifically marketed from the get-go as collectible nearly always depreciates. -Mintages would have to be high enough that a person could be reasonably assured of obtaining one if they so desired, but so not crazy high that they have untold millions of them sitting in the vaults 15 years later. Also there should be just one denomination chosen at a time, like say dimes which are well due for a makeover. And make it over once, then change the next denomination. get too many variants, and the average collector just can't keep up. Imagine if they had 4 new coins of each denomination each year. They already have quarters and dollars changing several times per year, and then the different mintmarks of each. So pick 1 denomination, change the design one time, and go from there. -If at all circulating (which they should be, see point 1) they would need to hold up reasonably well. Whether you love them or hate them, I think everyone would agree a colorized coin with half the color worn off would be extremely ugly.
All of this is addition to the obvious item of the appeal of the design itself. Pick a garish and/or uninspired design and it's all over no matter what.

Exactly what I think will happen. The Mint will try some, it WILL go over with all the people that buy STUFF. And there are virtually millions that just buy STUFF so it will start a trend like the State Quarters. I wonder what would have been said if it was announced back in the 80's that someday all our Quarters would have all sorts of designs for each state on them. Probably the same thing people used say about people flying.
