You've got 2 coins which were struck from the same die. It appears that the obverse die was damaged when it clashed with the collar die which holds the planchet around the edge of the coin during striking. From that point on, every coin struck from that die would have the same clash mark until it eroded away or was polished away by a mint employee.

Interesting. It did not occur to me that the die could clash with the collar.

Got to admit, I wasn't so specific in my knowledge.I knew it was a damaged die but not the exact cause.Never heard of that one either Scooby.

I'm not so sure it was necessarily the collar that caused that. It could be a clash with the edge of the opposite die. That seems much more plausible.
