Some time back I was purchasing high grade silver War Nickels... Upon checking this with my 10x Loupe I noticed that the serifs in the "T & Y" in LIBERTY was split when viewed at a 45 degree angle...
After my first posts to this forum last week, I now know their are some serious variety collectors in this forum, and if this is a variety you guys would know... I also have two other War Nickels, both 1945 S/S varieties that I would like confirmed (will have to post later as my granddaughter just stopped bye)...
Thanks...

Hi,

Technically, The coins were struck by doubled dies. BUT..before you jump for joy, more than half of all War Nickels have this doubling as the doubling was on master hubs that were used to make master dies and subsequently , working dies.

So, it is technically a doubled die but they are as common as sand at the beach so they have no extra value beyond the value of a normal War Nickel.

There is one die variety....a 1972 DDO Lincoln Cent that has a similar story and the coins have slight doubling. This particular 1972 DDO (Also effects D and S Mint coins) is so common that it is not even listed.

Master Hub and Master Die doubling also effects some Liberty Walking halves from the forties.

So for these issues, what is technically a doubled die has no extra value as they are in fact almost considered as normal for the issue.

Thanks,
Bill

Thanks Bill, I compared this coin with the other high grade Silver War Nickels and this was the only one that had the split serifs... I'm about to post two 1945 s/s varieties that need confirmation on said varieties as the information provided was taken from the ebay description and was not placed on the slab...
THANKS...
