Whats your feeling on this issue as a choice of your gold buying. They are a true weight and 24K. They have a numismatic value. What's you opinion

they aren't very popular and for a while traded for the gold melt value. However I have noticed that they trade for more than melt value. I think if you want a series to collect that would be fun and can get them for near melt that would be good. However, I'm all for gold eagles!

The wholesale price for these is still right around melt. I'm not a huge fan of the designs but would buy them for melt price. They have very little numismatic value at the present time.

While I prefer Eagles and the like. I wouldn't mind having them as well. Now...affording them, that's a completely different topic.

Due to the price not many can collect the entire series and I firmly believe there will be coins in this series that will be very valuable as it got over looked in 2008 and 2009.

07's are plentiful and there is a dealer who I spoke to who will not pay more than melt for 07. He is not sure about the 08 and 09's as he does not get any coming into his store for sale / trade etc. The activity for 2010 dated coins have picked up lately as most are still available from the mint. Even there you could have odd ones like Lincoln / Buchanan which could be stand outs based on popularity.

If you take this one step further based on the PAST mintage numbers not many complete sets (less than 3,000) can be put together even if you had all the money at your disposal. This number can only go lower based on future sales.

Some of the designs have been done with a great deal of detail (reverse design).

Is APMEX way off on their pricing for 08 and 09's (raw)? Take a look and let me know as I am not sure where they come up with some of those prices.

Edit below

Scroll down to the 08 and 09

I was interested enough to buy into this series during the first two years, but then the cost got out of my range when gold spot increased.

I have heard rumors that some of the first spouse coins were melted making their population even lower. Can anyone confirm that some were melted? If so, would you happen to know how many of which ones?

I'm sure some have been melted. I also started the series when they were selling out at the mint but got priced out as many other have had. As time goes by there will be some smaller mintage coins after 2008 that will possably create a premium but as for the common collector with a limited budget they are out of reach for a series.

The link I posted seems to get hung up. Go to APMEX, select gold and then select first spouse to get to it.

As per the melting -- I too heard about it. Even if they melted 50% of the 2007 it would still leave around 20K (per spouse) left over that are still in the market place. As most of 2007's had the max mintage of 40k.

WOW! It is not an easy to find out the number of coins that may have been melted but if you use the mintage as stated by the mint the 2007 spouse's totaled 140,223. A LOT OF MULLAH at today value $98,156,100.00. In researching this issue I found interesting that these coins were really not meant to be true bullion coins but to have a numismatic value. APMEX said that these coins sell very well. Everyone wants gold. LOL high priced.

I love these coins. I think they will make an awesome set. Unfortunately I can't afford them.

I stand with Dkillett. These coins are way out of my price range, but they sure are cool!
