I'm hoping some of the experts here can help me with this Lincoln. All the features on the obverse are normal except for LIBERTY. The letters on Liberty are spread very widely. How is it that everything can be normal but LIBERTY? What causes those letters to spread so much without any effect on the other features?

I don't know about deterioration. Wouldn't that show on the other devices too? Really can't wait to see an expert chimes in on this. Slightly misaligned die. Could that cause this? I don't know. Made me think though STJoe!

So did I stump all of you? (I know I'm stumped.) Or are the pictures inadequate to offer an opinion? I would really appreciate some input on this one.

My initial thought was that this could be some form of doubling, but nothing was listed on CONECA or coppercoins.

I compared a handful of my '97's to yours and they look similar. The LIBERTY is thicker than than the rest of the lettering, but yours did seem a little bit thicker.

Great idea Newbismatic. Here are two to compare:

Normal

Spread

1997-P-LMC---Question-On-Spreading-Liberty

What struck me was how the horizontal components of the letters (the crossbar on the "T", the base of the "L") are normal-sized, but the vertical components seem to be spread out.

If you look at the distance between the letters, they are also closer together because the letters seem to have been spread out.

This one does look interesting. It seems odd that just one area is affected that way. But I've seen doubled dies as minor to only affect one device. I feel it is a doubled die. I would send it off for confirmation. It may be a new find.
