Hello All,
A few years back I was on ebay bidding on certified War Nickles (mostly in the PCGS slab)...
In the listings I found two 1945s/s nickels graded MS68 in a NNC holder I have never heard of, and listed as rare varieties in the sellers descriptions... I copied the ebay photos and placed a label with said variety on the photo and holders... Upon viewing each coin I can report that on the coins best day, it would never grade over a MS65, and when bidding on slabs of this type (not knowing the grader) I place lower bids...
Since both coins are not listed in my CherryPickers Guide (fourth edition), my question to the Variety Experts is;
Are the varieties posted in his description accurate?
At $30.00 per coin, did I over pay for these two coins?

for just reg nickles not RPM's

ms64 $10, ms65 $20 ,ms66 30$, ms67 $80. ms68 $2,000+

the slabs dont say anything for the doubling someone added it in red after the fact so its hard to say " who says what rpm they are and if they are rpm1 and rpm2

if you read RED WRITING the guy placed on the ad it mentions RPM#001 AND RPM#009
not sure how to get a value on rpm's as far as I know Rpm's are not worth a huge amount unless its rare and people want them

This is just my immediate thoughts. NNC slabs are almost always inflated as far as grades go. Usually 2 or 3 higher than what is realistic in MS grades.
That first OMM is quite the spread and I don't recall ever seeing a War Nickel with such a dramatic distance in a re-punch. I like that one, never saw it before.
I'll have to dig out my Ribar - Wexler book and look for this. I have communicated with Brian Ribar through email a few times. I would bet he would be interested in this topic. Why don't you write him.

The second almost looks like a die chip. I have not seen this one either.

Wheezy stole what I was going to say! Yeah, don't put any validity into the NNC holder grade, but the first RPM looks impressive, if offered to me, I'd pay $50 or more for it. There are literally hundreds of of War Nickel RPMs, but I'm not familiar with any as strong as this either. I think it's real, just not familiar with it, I think the second one shown is a nice RPM also. It does appear that the seller knows what he's referring to. Just because it's in a third rate holder doesn't mean it can't be a variety. I like them both and would buy them as the RPMs they are from the photos shown.

I dug out my Wexler RPM Nickel Book- Yup, looks like RPM #1, but the photo shown above is an earlier die state with crisper details than the one shown in the book. I wouldn't put any stock into anyone's rarity ratings, but this looks to be an excellent RPM.

The attribution for the second one, RPM #9 is accurate as well. Both excellent examples.

The RPM #1 is more dramatic and should command more of a premium. The DDR on the second coin, RPM #9 is relatively minor, the coin's premium will be based on the RPM it shows.

I enjoy your posts, you've got some interesting coins, Broken Coin. Thanks for sharing.

That first one is a really nice RPM! I wouldn't think twice about $30 for that one, especially at MS65! Nice score!

Thanks Guys,
I purchased these on a whim as I collected error coins at the time and not varieties...
I was the one that placed the red colored labels on the holder as this is what was described in the ebay description (photos are also copied from the ebay listing)...

Please ... stop with the red font in the text of your posts!!

That said ... appear to be great coins.

Wish they were in other than NNC slabs ...
