I am thinking of getting a typeset book. A 7070 or possibly a Whitman. I have read here that 7070 books can tend to tone coins. The coins I would be putting in are XF condition not proofs. Would or could coins with miles on them tone in such a book? Is it mostly proofs or bu coins that tone?

I'm not a toned coin fan.

My 7070 is almost 18 years old. No toning or other problems. As with any album (Dansco, Whitman, etc.), how and where you store them is very important. They are not air tight, so they can be affected by the surrounding environment. Low humidity and stable temperature are important.

Where you store them is a huge part. Some people think they should store coins in a basement for safety, but that is the worst place.

Thanks for the replies!

In general, does a proof have a better chance to tone than a circulated coin?

The surfaces of a proof or uncirculated coin are more reactive than that of a circulated coin and thus, more prone to tone. From my experience, freshly cleaned coins are the most reactive of them all and can tone quite readily. This would be due to a combination of an unoxidized surface and an increase in surface area(microscratches will greatly increase the normal surface area of a coin) directly caused by the cleaning, thus providing a larger area to now undergo oxidation.
