Ever since I puchased this item with a group of 1700's-1800's foreign coins, it has been driving me crazy! I can't seem to find a match for it on the internet, so I'm hoping some intrepid collector will help me out with an identification, or even a good guess. It appears to be a small silver ball, pinched on the back, with 2 hallmarks. One mark is a pair of scales. The other mark is not very clear, I can't make out what it is, I hope the photo shows enough detal. The ball weighs 3.9 grams. I have no idea what it is, or where it originates. I don't know if this is jewelry or a small ingot. I think maybe it's an old form of coinage, or possibly a counterweight for weighing coins. The crude stamping reminds me of Roman coinage, but I just don't know. Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated! Thanks!

It might be a Java gold coin in Indonesia, or it might be from Burma or India. Perhaps someone can tell a better story. Welcome to the forum by the way.

It's a type of Thai 'bullet coin'.

Wow! You guys are amazing! I've tried to research this thing for months, to no avail, and within one day, you've solved the mystery of this strange little silver ball. Thanks to everyone for all the help and the warm welcome!

They're listed under Thailand in the Krause coin catalogues, too, even though to my mind they really belong more in the "primitive money" category, rather than actual "coins".

I don't have one in my collection - they'd be a bit bulky sitting in the album with the "normal" coins!

At 3.9 grams, yours would be a ¼ baht. Your one seems to have the "prasat (palace)" mark (the one highlighted in the top picture). The Krause catalogue (KM/C#45) values it at between $6 (VG condition) to $25 (EF condition). I'd put the condition of yours at a bit less than halfway between.

Thank you very much for that info. I realize now that I have the mark upside down in the photo and mistook it for a pair of scales. I was nearly certain it was some kind of weight. I've been collecting world coins here and there for years and had never seen one of these before. I have a few unusual coins from the India Native States, as well as a piece of Chinese knife money, so my 1/4 Baht will have a proud place with my other "oddball" coins. Thanks again!
