I recall reading somewhere that someone opened a roll of uncirculated 1877 cents and found them all stuck together.Do rolls really go back that far? Or was this a coin collecting myth?
Thanks biggfredd,I also read recently on this forum about Carson City wrapped rolls of Morgans. These things still have me wondering about the origins of coin rolling.
I do know that rolls of Lincoln cents existed all the way back. I also know that at least a couple of rolls of Indian cents were around at one time or another. Exactly when rolls started is a mystery (to me anyway), but I am pretty sure it was before 1900.
Do many original rolls of LWCs still exist or have they all been opened in search of gems?I read somewhere in my search for the origin of rolls that collecting original rolls of LWCs was quite popular until the advent of TPGs when collectors began opening them in hope of finding MS65 and better.
When Matthew Boulton was doing private coinage back in the 1790's he shipped them wrapped in paper rolls of standard amounts packed in kegs. So you could say that rolls go back over 200 years.
