Hi guys. Please take a look at this 1955 I just found in my Wheaty hoard. I'm interested in finding out if I should be excited.

It is called a poor mans double die. I have read it is caused by Machine Doubling Damage, or MDD. The die shifted during the strike causing the doubling. http://reviews.ebay.com/1955-Double...000003633998

Correction: This is from die extreme wear. This happened on a lot of years in the early/mid 50's as they were over using the dies to make every cent they could from the dies. They continued till the dies broke. Thus you we all the cracks/chips/breaks/BIE's/lack of wheat lines on the reverses even on BU coins. 1954 is a hard year to get a nice EDS example. Tons of LDS and VLDS because they just continued to used them after practical use. When a die starts showing wear the devices that are closest to the rim all flow tword that direction. Thus the example above. The 5/5 3/3. They were pawned off as sucker bait to newbies searching for the famous big 1955 DDO. They even gave them a cutsie name to get people to buy them as they were a lot cheaper than the real thing. When they sold them they realized they has nothing but an over priced late die state coin. Machine Doubling didn't affect the coin above, it was the dies that were at fault.

It could be from the same die or may not be. In a BU roll of 1955 cents I found 19 out of 50 with the worn die issues. So they are common.

This didn't just happen in the 50s. They are common on all wheat cents.
