I brought these up when I stumbled on to them when I first started collecting and they helped me tremendously.

It is a couple of well explained threads that coppercoins typed out for people wanting to learn the minting process and the world of die varieties. Let's save him a little typing, shall we?

First is a thorough guide through the the minting process.

And, I also found this helpful where he explains Machine Doubling vs. doubled dies.

I hope you find these as helpful as I did.

This video helps, but the missed a couple of steps with the lack of the master die/master hub not being mentioned. But other things appear correct.

Also found this link.

It's very similar to the History Channel one. Minting process for the Presidential dollars. I found the ending sentiments kinda funny.

Reading Coppercoins thread and watching the videos helped greatly in visualizing how and why different varieties and errors occur.

First of all, thanks for the info & great vids(gotta love the History Channel). Second of all, that is a great diagram that Coppercoins made, that should help many.

Hi All,

Just a few things...The post was done in 2008 and most of the information was correct or corrected so at that time it was right. Some, however is now outdated.

Today in 2011 and for a few years before, the epoxy model idea is not used much, if at all when creating master hubs. Coin Designs are worked up on a computer screen using a program that goes right from a drawing and artwork on the computer right to the creation of a master hub that is cut using a laser. Many master hubs are cut using the computer model.

No epoxy model or reducing lathe are needed.

One other detail is that today, the mint marks are on the master hubs as they are added at the design phase for each coinage design. They are not engraved or added to master dies after the master die is made. The master hub is where the mint mark originates.

Thanks,
Bill
