Here is my first Half Eagle, 1880-S and I believe that S is for San Francisco mint, as I am guessing that is where most of these were minted, via San Fran or Philly.... Curious thoughts on what you guys think of it overall and its condition or possible grade, as it is circulated? It cost $415 on running auction, and considering the rise in gold prices, the cheapest I found it was for $465 buy it now, and they go up to about $850, of course the ones in ridiculously good shape for being almost 132 years old, lol....

Excellent buy, Hawk. The picture probably does not show this coin as well as seeing it in person would but the definition of the stars and the word "Liberty" on the obverse looks very good to me. Likewise, the wording on the reverse is also very well defined, as are the eagle's feathers. Over all, this coin looks as if it is a "fine" grade coin. Not that I am an expert coin grader, lol! But we all have some idea of what the various grades look like to us and that is my opinion. Seen in person, this could well change, of course. On top of that, you have a very nice piece of gold there that is just under 1/4 Troy oz. Considering what a lot of places are charging for gold coins these days, the price you paid looks quite reasonable. Well done.

Read your thread and found it to be an inspiration to do the same for my little girl's college fund. Just got my first gold indian half. Boy, was it smaller than I had imagined!

That is a nice piece. I am falling in love with 1933 US gold coins, just got my first $10 Indian last weekend at right around spot.

Thanks Ed, I was curious of its gold amount, I calculate when last purchase arrives, my 21st piece of gold a 1987 1 10th gold Eagle (As I have a proof 88 and a regular 86, and the 86 is a new local addition), and you are right, no picture rarely does these coins justice. even though it looks no where 132 years old, you can tell the style was just way different then, and it fits the times nicely, and easily my largest coin about the size of a nickel I would say....
That is a beautiful coin TBK, I really like that one as well, and will have to put it tops on my list, even though that is a hiiiiiigh dollar coin....
Probably be tough to find that one short of 800 bucks, even though gold has dipped a bit....

Silverhawk,
It was an old timer that is there every month and he had two at that price and probably the same on the Liberties but I didn't ask about them. It is a local flea markets that takes place once a month, Silver Eagles could have been had for $1.50 over spot and random Morgans for $29. I guess I should wait and just buy there but I am impulsive so what can I say.

I feel ya TBK, as impulsive buy should be our middle names, lol....
What are you gonna do, sometime paying a couple dollars more is worth the convenience of a local shop. Buy it and carry it out the door and right into the collection eh....
Anyhow with that nice half Eagle (after holding it I can see why there so popular), and the two new AGE 1 10th oz. coins all show up, I will be up to roughly 40 grams of gold, or 1 oz. 9 grams....

Quote: Thanks Ed, I was curious of its gold amount You're welcome, Hawk. IIRC, those old gold coins had about 0.242 Troy ounce of gold in them. I suppose that wear could reduce that slightly but your coin looks like it is in great shape, so there's likely minimal wear on it.

Nice looking coins, no culls, at least based on what is visible in the picture.

Are you just using a nickle tube for these or do they make actual tubes for them?

Nice pickups, lesser grading company's and around the grade perfect for your roll. I might have passed on the Indian with the rubbed off date, but that is just my OCD. Again, you are putting together a roll of mid grade or less seems like from the first page of this thread.... Since I will be lucky to get one of each, (need and Indian next), then I will search for a gradable example.... Quick question Johnny or anyone. You guys ever go for the 1700 gold coins, mostly Spanish coins is what I find on ebay. In simple weight terms, how much gold is in these below.... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...:MESINDXX:ITI think it would be a wise and profitable move to add some nice condition gold coins pre 1800, and obviously you gonna have to fork out some serious money to find find a decent size gold coin from 1787 for example, still nice condition. Something I would think would be a very rare thing....

Quote: Are you just using a nickle tube for these or do they make actual tubes for them? I just use a nickel tube. It is a tighter fit than with nickels, but it still works well. Half eagles are also a bit thinner, so I would be able to squeeze 50 into one of the tuber if I chose to take it that far...lol. Quote:Quick question Johnny or anyone. I really like them because some of them circulated in the US before the US mint came into being during the time of the colonials. The premiums aren't usually that bad on the larger ones. I have owned a 1/2 escudo and a 1 escudo before, and have sold them both. I bought this ANACS 8 escudo piece a couple of years ago, and it's about the diameter of a Morgan dollar, but much much thinner(it contains around .8 ounces of gold). The auction link you posted, I think the seller is a bit deceptive because doubloons usually refer to a 2 escudo piece, while the one he is selling is only 1/2 escudo(which has less than 1/20 ounce of gold). The price is a bit high imho, though it does have very nice details, but only about $75 in gold. Congrats on your first half eagle silverhawk, very nice example!

So I'm guessing you will take them out of the slabs? Such a cool collection plus when your done almost a 10 oz tube of gold will feel awesome in your hands. I REALLY like the Indians, they are just super cool to me. I am going to wait until next months flea market to buy my next one, the old boy I bought from last had several Indians and Liberties all near spot. I can't wait to see the finished product.
