My favorite size US gold piece is the half eagle. They have much smaller premiums than quarter eagles, and not the bulkiness of the larger eagles. Anyways, I am going to pursue filling a tube of "junk" half eagles(40). Therefore my standards for the quality of these coins are actually low(cleaning or excessive wear dont matter).
What I like about the "tube" approach is they are easy to conceal and take up little storage place. I know this will take forever, but I plan to sell some of my other coins to help convert this. thoughts?

The way you cherrypick 1916 SLQ's you ought to go for a roll of them instead! LOL!

The half is the least popular, so it should be cheapest to buy, as long as you can find them.

What is a good average price at current market for just one, say a good deal if you will?

That's gonna be one cool looking tube when you're done! Overall, I think it's a great idea. It has profit/loss potential, is a nice bullion play, retains the numismatic angle and associated interest, is liquid, is divisible, makes great inheritance material and is something I'd thoroughly enjoy doing if I could. Put a stake in the ground with a few now if you can and go for it.
Looking forward to seeing what you're going to cut loose for funds.

Thanks Onebowl! Couldnt have said it better myself! The only problem is going to be finishing it before I retire, and I'm only 30...lol.
biggfred: Why do you say the half eagle is the least popular? I actually always thought it was one of the most popular; the workhorse of gold coinage.

Circulated, raw, common-date half eagles trade at a slight premium to their gold content or just over $350 these days. Quote: biggfred: Why do you say the half eagle is the least popular? I think fredd was referring to current collectors where quarter eagles and eagles have a larger base of enthusiasts.

Since this was posted in bullion, I thought you meant half-ounce half eagles. Didn't realize you meant $5 liberties and Indians, which are popular. Carry on.

That's a very smart goal. Pick up as many different dates as possible.

Thanks guys! Another reason I'm doing this, I've already got a type set locked away in my album, but I like to have gold that I'm not afraid to handle a little bit, and I like feeling the weight slowly increase as I fill the tube up. Up to 5 now! Only 35 to go!
