So last weekend I went to an auction with a good amount of coins. They had to separate "collections". The first was pretty good with probably about $2000 in coins. The second looked more like 300-400 dollars. Well I did pick up the 21 mercs for under $20 each so I was very happy. After they got through the first collection the moved onto the second. A lot of random junk but then they started on a few Morgan dollars. They said " Up next is an 1895 Morgan dollar." My spirits raised and I went up to the guy holding the coin as bids were being placed. Looked at and then flipped it over only to see CC. I look at my greysheet again just to make sure and sure enough without even thinking I yell out "IT's FAKE!" The auctioneer stops and doesn't even get mad at me. He simply states, "I know nothing about the coin and do not guarantee anything on it. We will restart the auction with that new news." The coin sold for $85! I couldn't believe it. I just couldn't believe I got 2 key date mercs for under $40 and a fake coin sold for $85! What a day :)

Some people will buy anything. I was referring to the person who bought a fake Morgan for $85, of course, not you.

Strange - I'm not sure if actions typically at least guarantee authenticity, but I cannot believe they'd just let the auction go on like that. Especially with such an obvious fake.
But nice price on your purchase! Glad to hear you didn't go after the Morgan :)

I'm actually surprised the auctioneer didn't kick you out. I'm not trying to be rude at all, but they want the money when it comes down to it. And that can be seen as intervening in their business. Is it right what they did? heck no it's not, not at all. But they are auctioneers. They try to find the biggest bidder, then move to the next one, and so on. But they should have done their homework on the subject first, and selling counterfeits can ruin their business. That's not good business practice.

Actually what they did was 100% correct. They states there position, did not try to argue with you and allowed everyone the chance to retract they're bid.

the grade of the dimes were low. I will try and post pics tonight if I remember.
The auctioner is a local guy and has many repeat and local customers. he was not upset that I said what I did. He isn't trying to scam anyone. Of course he will try to squeeze every penny out of the bidders but not unethically.

That person that bought it for $85.00 is exactly the type of people that are running up prices on ebay on common date junk. Hard to get a good deal nowadays because they will bid on "anything" and way over the true value. It's back to coin shows for me.

These are the dimes I picked up. Think I paid $39 for both: I know the picture isn't great but they are legit
