Just wonder why some people buy there bullion from a local coin dealer rather than a place like APMEX? Edited by Brucec 03/24/2011 5:43 pm

I actually get a better price than ampex, no waiting on shipping and I'm supporting a local business

sometimes a local dealer is cheaper than APMEX and you don't have to pay shipping. I prefer buying from forum members as they are usually cheaper than APMEX as well

To Canada, its 34.99 for shipping, plus another 15 dollars for sending my Money order and 2 day postage. So a total of 50 dollars. I rather go to my coin shop b/c they have maples in stock for less than what APMEX sells. Even the wolves and Grizzlys are slightly less. The downside? APMEX has way more cool stuff, Somali elephants, kooks, koalas, harmonics, eagles, and much more. My dealer mostly only has stuff from the Canadian mint. I have made APMEX orders in the past, and its usualy a bulk order to keep shiping costs down.

Well thanks for the replies just wondered. Just placed two more large orders with APMEX but next time I will check with a local dealer if we even have any in my area. As for now I have been away so would have to use APMEX anyway sure never thought I would buy silver at these prices just $43.00 an ounce today that included the mark up and shipping hope I am not making a mistake. Everything I read keeps saying 3 digit figures for silver in the near future guess we shall see do not plan to sell anyway just keep it unless something happens and I must sell some. Hope to give it to my kids they will need is more than me as in 20 years or less I will not be here anymore anyway.

congrats! Just to let you know my order did take about 4 weeks to get from start to finish. They might not be as swamped now though.
I'm doing the same. passing it on to the kids. Of course it won't mean I might sell a few if the price is right to fund a vacation or two :P

Well thanks better not take 4 weeks though they told me I would have my one order before I leave my winter RV park April 7th and the other order goes to my brothers house I will stop at in Orange Grove TX before heading back to central PA.
Was going to wait till around the end of April when I got back home but figure I may pay more then as silver seems to be taking off again.
I sure wish I would have bought allot more when I once paid $7.34 per ounce if you only new then.

With so many prophets (including me), around, why not buy not buy silver futures?
If you are going to invest say $1000, why not?

I buy all my stuff through a local dealer. He treats me right. I mainly buy Silver Eagles, I can get them cheaper through him and no waiting. I've been thinking about buying some gold. If the price will trend down a little, I may buy some through APMEX, their prices seem a little better on gold than my dealers.

Local dealer advantages: -You get to see what you buy. It shouldn't matter with bullion but there are plenty of people who are picky about the condition/appearance of their bullion purchases so this way they see in advance what they're getting. -No paper trail if you pay cash -You get it right away -You get to interact with the dealer and other investors/collectors and may learn something new I like APMEX quite a bit, and have bought from them numerous times with no complaints whatsoever. I just hate the part about waiting and hoping/praying nothing goes wrong with the order processing or the shipping.

I research online but buy from coin shows at least once a month if possible.

Buying from a local dealer has a lot going for it. There are a couple of local coin shops that I want to check out soon. One of them has a great rep for quality, price, and knowledge of coins that the owner is happy to share with customers. Only prob for me is that I can buy on-line and not be charged sales tax. If I buy locally, I will have to pay an extra 7.8% or so. There are a few things that are exempt from sales tax but I do not think that bullion coins are one of them. I just ordered some ASEs from APMEX but they have yet to arrive. I am eagerly awaiting them, as they are the start of my collection. If that all goes well, I will get some 90% silver coins. I really like the walking liberty 1/2 dollars and also the Kennedy 1/2 dollars. Add in some dimes and quarters and it will make a real nice rainy day fund. I hope to have both silver and gold and want to investigate the technique of buying silver with gold and gold with silver when the ratios are right for it. Will probably concentrate on the 1/2 oz. gold Eagles at first but may add other weights later on.
