Hi all! Was at work Wed and a guy comes up and says "I have something for you" I thought ok? He hands me a 1910 wheaty that he says he got out of the "give a penny, take a penny" Used it to scratch off a lottery ticket, didn't win, and decided it wasn't a lucky penny! I looked at it and tried to give him at least a quarter for it. He wouldn't take it. So here it is. I was really surprised at the condition. I'm not the greatest at grading, but I was thinking maybe MS-60 Uncirculated? I was thinking it could have been higher, but for the lighter color wear on the face. Let me know your thoughts! Also, givin that this is a magnified photo of the coin, the small nicks on the rim is not noticable with the naked eye. The outside rim is very very smooth. Edited by Jaymon74 03/25/2011 4:46 pm

any coin that has wear is not an MS coin.
this looks like an XF, still a great coin to find in circulation no doubt.
nice grab!

Excellent coin. High AU. The story this coin could tell would be fun to listen to.

I'd say it's at least AU55.

I'll go with xf-45, but a coin in that condition was probably taken out of circulation in the 1930's, and just recently put back in. Amazing.

Thank you for the grading.
I was wondering. As far as MS, That means absolutely NO wear? How would the coin being graded have "slight blemishes" and red-brown color" without having any wear? That's what I was going by when I said MS-60. Just trying to learn guys.

Quote: How would the coin being graded have "slight blemishes" and red-brown color" without having any wear There are 10 different levels of MS (mint state) coins. MS60-MS70, actually that eleven isn't it. Anyway MS60 coins can be blemished, stained, have patina and be nicked up. The nicks are bag marks as the coin went from mint to banks or from person to person. Long timed bagged Morgan dollars are good examples of coins with lots of bag marks. Coins can also be in circulation for a while and be MS. It's when the devices of the coins get worn off that they loose their MS classification. Your super nice coin shows wear on the cheek and ear so now is AU.

I agree with AU-50.. The thing is, it might have been an MS coin before the lottery ticket adventure :P

Well, either way. I think it was really nice for a 1910. Free didn't hurt it any either! I just feel it's hard to believe that a 1910 Wheaty can still be in circulation! Thank you all for the compliments on it.
Anyhoo, I'll put it down as AU-50 with that being the most agreed upon.
