Hey guys, just got my awesome Lafayette dollar! The coin itself is HUGE, and is like 90% silver. Only 30,000 of these coins were distributed in 1900. The coin was used as a fundraiser for the Lafayette statue in France, and commemorates G. Washington's birthday. It really is a great piece. I also learned recently that it's the first US coin ever to have a president on it. Now enough chit chat... Here are some pics. This pic shows you just how thick this coin is. And here is the size comparison between the quarter and the Lafayette Here is the Lafayette dollar next to my bu Morgan. Edited by madlou22 03/28/2011 9:40 pm

Hah I know what you mean. But this guy was totally legit, and I even talked to him over the phone. He was a reputable ebay seller, and that's what matters. I also got this coin for a pretty good bargain, considering it's condition.

This Lafayette has been horribly cleaned ... the obvious harsh marks across the obverse and reverse fields and devices are ... well ... obvious. I'm not even considering my views on authenticity.
Discussion on Chinese fake can follow ... for now ...
For the YN OP ... we value and appreciate your energy and enthusiasm ... that is for sure the future of the hobby ...
However ... slow down ... read some books ... mind your lessons ... this coin is not gradeable by any of us.
What did you think you were buying?

The pictures exaggerate the cleaning marks. I know it's been cleaned, but if I were to pay for one in such good shape as this one that was uncleaned, it would go for thousands. I will try to get a better picture that has less exaggerated cleaning scratches.

Hello Madlou, I don't want to sound negative here but what condition did the seller say this coin was in? I know you mentioned he was a reputable ebay seller. Did he say anything about the coin being whizzed? We try to look out for each other here and that is why I ask. If the seller did not say the coin had been harshly cleaned you may want to contact him

This is just an opinion, but I would run for the hills if someone told me I could buy a coin that was graded "AU++" ... But it is a hard type to purchase for many, and if you like it, that's all that matters...

$350 is a lot of money to most people and I will be honest here and tell you that this coin is worth about half that amount. Now if you like it, by all means keep it but that auction could easily be classified as "Significantly Not As Described" (SNAD) and the coin returned for a refund.
$350 is problem-free XF money for this coin and while that coin has XF details, it is far from problem-free. It has been harshly cleaned, polished, and maybe whizzed and wasn't close to BU to begin with. My advice would be to return it for a refund but don't let my opinion sway you. If it's one you're putting in an album and not concerned with the issues, hang onto it.

I agree $350 was a hefty price for this coin. It falls short of AU, and has definitely been cleaned. As stated, if you like it, hold on to it. I stay away from any seller that states "no returns", especially one who described this coin as an AU/BU. In his corner though on one thing, at least he acknowledged "probably cleaned long ago".

I don't mean to make your heart sink, but seller has only 13 detailed ratings. Total feedback score of 114.... Not quite what I'd call a reputable dealer IMHO as a long time eBayer....
Item is significantly not as described.

madlou- I think some posters are being a bit overboard, but I also feel they're doing it out of genuine concern that you don't let your obvious youthful enthusiasm steer you into a mistake. Big? Naw, it's just another silver dollar, not even as big as an ASE or other crowns, let alone a 5oz. ATB Quarter. Worth half what you paid? Aw c'mon, numismedia shows more than that for just G4. I'm not seeing more than VF detail on the horse, and it has been badly scratched and cleaned, plus a ding or two. You're young. There's lots of these out there, and with a little patience and maybe a few more dollars, you can buy a nice one with certification, maybe even a pedigree. You'll always find you're better buying a nice coin that will give you pride of ownership and better potential resale value than looking at this and having to excuse the scratches to yourself and everyone you show it to for the next 50 years. "Well, yeah, it's all scratched up and pretty worn, but I didn't want to pay for a nice one." I've been dealing in coins since 1964. I think some of the nonsense like tripling in prices between ms69 and ms70 is just the result of no one being willing to tell the emperor he's nekkid, but there's a time to pay more and get nicer, and this is it.
