I can't figure what happened here with LIBERTY. It's like the letters got moved or smeared some hoe during the strike. The date also appears thicker than usual- could it be doubled? I can't seem to get any better shots.

I tried a different pic below. Maybe it will help.

Without better pics, I cannot call it anything other than PMD.

some of it looks like die-gouging, but I'm no expert. other marks, namely the "blood spatter" emitting from Lincoln's throat, look like PMD.

That was also my first thought so I was about to toss it but then I took a closer look. It reminds me of a coin posted posted by AdamE, I could have the name wrong. And I know I need better pics. I may need to put this aside for now. It's a difficult shot to get. I also don't believe it is Struck Through Grease.

the rotated capped die strike through? no, it cant be that.

it looks like die wear on the date, and some severe die polishing in the field near liberty. not sure about the cuts, those are probably PMD(because of the similar gouge on Lincolns shoulder), are they raised of depressed?

It looks like a combination of a few things.

The bottom of the date kind of looks like die trails.

They are recessed. My primary focus is LIBERTY and all the images I get when I focus on LIBERTY make it appear too blurry to see. I posted these shots because they are the best I can get of the coin at all, whatsoever- at this point anyway. I'll work on better pics another time before I pull off all my hair.

It may be a strike through oil. It moves more freely than a Struck Through Grease. With the direction toward the rim makes me think this is what we are looking at. Mike Diamond may have another solution?

I suspect it was struck through a very late-stage, partly disintegrated die cap. The floor of the cap was probably thin as gold foil and incomplete in some areas. Then again, I could be wrong. The series of indentations above the date and the "spray" behind Lincoln's bust are not typical of any capped die strike. These defects may be unrelated to the capped die strike. A complicated error however you look at it.
