A friend of mine gave me a handful of hole fillers and this one was in the bunch. Was not familiar with the Large "S" M.M. on this year coin. FS1-013.6 was marked on the flip. Is that an accurate listing ? Thanks. Images are scans so not real detailed etc.
Yes, in higher grades. From G-F they are about 20% higher, and in VF-AU they are about 40% higher than small dates. In the different MS grades they can be as much as 100% higher (double value) than the small dates. Few of the major guides have picked up on the variety, but they all should eventually. The large S is about 19 times more scarce than the 1928S small S...so, out of every completely randomly mixed roll of 1928S cents, expect to find about three per roll.
Thanks for the info and verification. I looked up the mintage figures on the 28-S. 17 million. So that would make the large S about 6% of the total or 1.02 million. Not quite under a million but not too bad. I think my math is correct :)
coppercoins, Thank you for the information.Your knowledge is incredible.I should have known...your book"looking through Lincoln Cents" is in my library.
What's the theory behind why these happened? It would appear the Mint was just experimenting with the larger mark in 1928 because it didn't carry over until 1941.
