Actually, what it means is that in the calendar year 1957, there were three series of $1 silver certificates printed...... 1935G notes were being printed in 1956 and continued be printed into 1957.... during the time that the 1935G notes were being printed, IGWT was added to the printing plates.... the earlier 1935G notes did not have IGWT on their backs, but the later 1935G notes did..... most of the 1935G notes were printed without IGWT, so the 1935G notes printed with IGWT are therefore scarcer and more valuable today.
1935H notes were also printed in 1957, and they all were printed with IGWT..... 1957 notes began printing in 1957 and all carry IGWT on their backs.
The only series that IGWT becomes an issue is series 1935G (in which there are notes both with and without IGWT...... all notes printed before series 1935G (1928, 1935, 1935A, 1935B, C, D, E, F) do not have IGWT on their backs..... all notes printed after 1935G (1935H, 1957, 1957A, 1957B) do have IGWT.
Many folks make the mistake of thinking that the series numbers on banknotes directly correspond to calender years (as on coins), but this is not the case..... "series" on banknotes does not mean calendar year..... series 1862 $1 notes for instance, were printed from 1862 through 1869, so the majority or these "civil war" notes were actually printed after the civil war had ended...... there was no series 1864, 1867, 1868..... although notes were printed in those calendar years (they were all series 1862)..... on the other hand, the series 1935H notes were all printed in 1957 only.
1935H notes were also printed in 1957, and they all were printed with IGWT..... 1957 notes began printing in 1957 and all carry IGWT on their backs.
