Hello,

please help me answer my questions whether such stains as on the two pictures happen to silver? Is it normal?

The left coin is more severely stained as the other. The stains were not cleaned by soap and hot water, nor by placing them on aluminium foil in water with baking soda and salt.

They are 37.05~37.1mm in diameter.
They are 3mm thick (3.25mm if measuring the edge).
They weight 31.27g and 31.34g.
They are propelled by fairly strong neodymium magnet (but not attracted to it, and there is slight resistance).

Thanks in advance for your help!
Tear.

Silver bullion can indeed tone and haze like the Philharmonics you have pictured, it is typically due to improper storage. Not much you can do for it besides dipping in a commercial coin cleaner like E-Z-Est of Jeweluster, but I would not recommend that for a novice with no experience dipping a coin(it is easy to make the coin worse if you do not do it properly). Since it is just silver bullion, I would recommend trading them in for more perfect specimens.

You can't really see much in those pics, but toning is normal for the phils or any other form of silver. The philharmonic I've had out and about for 3 yrs has held up quite well and has very little toning.

Thanks for your quick reply, tips and warm welcome :). I have two follow up questions, if I may:

Is the value of the coin severely reduced when it has such stains?

If not treated (kept in the same state, in the same conditions - plastic tubes by 20 pieces in tube, dark place) can it progress and damage the coin severely (resulting in significant value loss)?

I appreciate your help.

The primary value of the coin is in the silver, better examples may sell for a a few dollars more but there is no significant impact on value. If you keep the coins in a cooly dry environment, they should be fairly stable.

Another possibility that should be mentioned is a phenomenon known as "milk spots" which is caused by the planchet preparation process. It may affect one coin and not another and it also has affected several world bullion coins as well.

A bit off the topic, but along the same line...Just got a Canadian Grizzly today, I have the wolf that is developing the "milk" stains, is there any one can do to prevent these stains?
