Hi all,

I was hoping to pick the brains of some of the members here. I am looking to collect some foreign coins to use with another hobby (role-playing games). I am interested in worthless coins with as little english/recognizable western text on them as possible. Coins that aren't round would be a plus too!

I'm hoping that someone may be able to point me in the right direction to gain some interesting-looking coins.

Thanks in advance,

Shottglazz

How about Chinese and/or Arabic coins? No western text, anyway, although they will be round. Some older Japanese coinage was rectangular, but that might not be available cheaply?

Chinese or Arabic would be perfect! Any advice on gaining them? Banks have said they don't sell foreign coins, only paper? I noticed that coins from Iran, Principe or Viet Nam are all 14,000 to 19,000 to the dollar?

My advice is to cruise ebay looking for bargain lots from the regions you're interested in. Foreign coin collecting other than Canada and Great Britain is pretty niche here in the US, I suspect the same in Canada, so I'm going to guess you probably don't have much luck at coin shops. As you have already found, banks aren't going to be helpful either.

Once you've reached (I think) 50 posts, you can post in the "items wanted" section here on the site, that might be your best bet once you've reached that milestone.

Also, most coin shops I've been in have a huge junk box of foreign coins. I'm sure that you would find exactly what you are looking for at exactly the right price.

I take it you do know that there are "fantasy" Lord of the Rings coins available. Joel's coins have some.

though they might be a little pricy for your purposes.

Thanks for the fast replies guys!

MathieuMA - I might PM you about those.
Wei Fun - Haven't had much luck with ebay yet (most lots seem overpriced for junk coins).
Pinenut - Good suggestion, I'll check those.
Bacchus2 - I've seen the commercially-produced fantasy coins. Very nice, but way more than I wanted to spend.

Shottglazz : I keep those, they are 'souvenir' from my father :) But I'm sure they could be found in lots on ebay.

Here are some links :

http://cgi.ebay.com/Lot-israel-coin...t_500wt_1156
http://cgi.ebay.com/BIG-LOT-80-ISRA...t_872wt_1141

Just do simple searches with the words coin lot + country name - and search worldwide (check shipping price though)
I'm sure you'll be able to find nice lots of "cheap coins" with the look you are trying to find.

Etheopia coins are cool because they have lions on them and mine doesn't have Western text.
