A lot of posts from new collectors about their first collectible coin have been showing up. Just been wondering how some of long time collectors got started.

Whether you're a beginner, or long-time collector, there's two questions, what was the first piece that started your collection?

Do you still have that piece? If so,

My first coin was found when I was 11 in 1992. I found it in a handful of quarters because of the shiny edge (no copper color).

It was a 1952 D Washington. Asking around, my cousin told me it was real silver, and the others in my hand were nothing but 'junk' clad metal.....(sorry to all the modern collectors for calling it junk) ....I've been checking my change ever since.

Although I had a few IHC's and Buff's given to me when I was very young what really got me started collecting was the first coin I got back in my change from my first visit to Angeles City in the Philippines. After that I was hooked.

1826 George 1V British shilling.

The business where my dad worked had a safe, but the owner of the business lost the key. My dad, who had a reputation to be able to fix anything, was asked to open the safe. He picked the key lock, and touch felt the tumblers in the combination lock.

In the bottom drawer of the safe lay the above mentioned coin. He flipped it at me. That coin was the start of my collection. I was 12 years old; I still have the coin.

He scratch made a new duplicate set of keys for the safe. Those keys remained in use for another 16 years, until the business was bought out.

Like this one from last September...

https://goccf.com/t/71027

Or this one that is archived (and thus cannot be replied to)...

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=41590

Or this one that asks what was the first coin bought...

http://www.coincommunity.com/forum/...PIC_ID=37505

There are probably a lot more similar posts. It is okay to recycle an old topic for the benefit of new members, especially if the previous thread on that topic has been archived.

In 1963 I went to the bank to get change for my business, When I got back to my office I checked the rolls I had gotten and opened one of the cent rolls for the cash register...Out popped 50 bu 1963 Canadian cents ( this was in New Jersey!). I then checked the other rolls and in the end I had 6 rolls of the '63 Canada cents! ....still have them.
