I store all my coins in 2x2 holders and put them in binders. I have been folding the 2x2 stapling it shut then putting Scotch Magic Tape around the sides of the 2x2 to seal out any air. Does anyone have any comments on this practice. I just do not feel the 2x2 is that air tight with just stapling.
Love to hear your opinions

I haven't tried them myself, but they do make a self sticking 2x2 that requires no staples.
FYI - the staple holes may not be really air tight?

I have all my best coins in 2 x 2s so far with no tape and no problems that I can see. Personally I would be a little leary of any kind of tape, since the tape usually seems to dry out in time... There must be something leaching of the tape for it to dry out.

Staples should work just fine

For me staples alone work fine. Just a note I recently bought new flat back stapler. It works great and now I don't need to flatten with pliers after stapling

Flat cinch staples are definately the way to go, no contest. I have one that has some kind of compound mechanism and it staples very easily. I still double clinch with the pliers to make sure that no possibility exists for scratches.

I flatten staples with a needle nose pliers. Nothing you do to a 2x2 will make it air tight.

I've used the "Day Mount" brand of self-sealing 2X2 holders and they seem to work well. Coins sealed up several years ago are still secure and there is no sign of deterioration of the holder. They come in white or black and have a nice look.
Overall I prefer Eagle plastic holders with Mylar windows since they can be opened and closed repeatedly. Their drawback is that they are rather thick and don't fit easily into albums designed for cardboard 2X2's.

I used to use staples all the time but the first time I tried prying a staple out with a screwdriver and it ran accross the coin. So now only tape on the three openable sides. Basically staples work well and when flattened, even better. HOWEVER, when opeing a 2x2 with something to pry open a staple, not smart to use them in the first place. Also, taped edges make slipping into those pockets on those 20 slot plastic pages easier than a stapple unless really flattened good. And opening a 2x2 that is taped is a smap with a knife. You just slit the tape and poof, it's open and can be used again since no marks, holes, damage from staples. AND a roll of that tape is lot cheaper than a stapler and a box of staples.

I use a regular stapler and have a set of smooth edge, bent-tip pliers to flatten the staples. I open 2x2s with scissors, cutting off one side.
I agree that 2x2 are not going to be completely air tight no matter how you seal them. The environment you store them in is number one.

For more valuable coins, I use recycled acrylic screw capsules. Most dealers have a few at least for sale, and there is usually a good assortment of sizes. That's OK for the more valuable coins, because they wind up in my safe.
The problem with screw capsules is that they don't store in an album.

I've been taping mine for the reason Carl mentioned and to prevent scratching staple to coin, although flattening the staple would alleviate that problem. I did think taping would make them more airtight, but probably not.

Here is a sort of test. Take any 2x2, staple it on as many sides as you want. Now put it to your mouth with one of the opening type sides facing your mouth and blow. You will see that regardless of flattening or not, a stapled 2x2 allows your breath to go right through. Now tape those edges and try that. Just one more thing to help protect your coins.

just carl are you not worried about the tape giving off gases from the adhesive?
