I just received this one from Bobby & Susan. I have seen a number of VAM-6A's(pitted reverse) and their somewhat common but I have not seen one with the pitting so low on the reverse.Usually its up under the tail feathers.Any thoughts?

First thought is, it can't be a 6A. It's tough to say what it is from that pic; if you can conclusively determine that it's pitting, you might have something there. The only other pitted 1897 I know of is the 3A, which from the description (I can't find a pic), doesn't resemble yours either.

It's definitely pitting Dave. Heres another pic, hope this helps. Was the VAM-6A always in the exact same position, under the left side tail feathers?

Yes, the 6A won't vary *that* much. Some pitting is visible under the wreath, but directly above the D rather than around the E.
