I have, and always will, pay immediately after winning an auction. I figure I bought it, I owe it, go ahead and pay it.

Now I'm on the selling end and in new territory. I had a BIN up and it sold that day. But, I am still waiting for the payment. How long does the buyer have to pay you and leave you wondering if you've actually sold the item or not?

It's kind of frustrating to be holding inventory "in case".

I'm one of those buyers that pay immediately too. I hate owing someone money and want my mind cleared.

When I've sold on ebay I give the winner 3 days to pay. All the selling I've done I only had one problem with a buyer not wanting to pay postage even tho it was clearly stated how much the postage was.

I've seen on some buy it now feature require immediate payment through paypal.

Scooby,

With BIN's ya kind of expect it to be paid for right after they click "commit to buy". I usually wait about 48 hours after normal auctions in case they place a snipe bid and are out of town for the weekend. In this case, I would send them a friendly email and ask them ... HEY WHAT'UP! Let us know what they say.

Matchbox is correct. Ther is a switch in the credit card section that will make them pay immmediatly if buy it now. So you won't hear anything from them unless they pay.

I've seen those options on listings I've bought or have bid on, but still need to learn how to navigate ebay as a seller.

I guess I have a lot to learn.

Still.

Use the advance screen for selling an item otherwise you might not see the options you need.

I haven't sold a lot but I'm feeling better about it. I still move careful slow on the sell an item screen. Scared I'll mess it up :)

Tim posted a good link, though I've seen sellers specify that they would like payment within 24 hours. I agree though - it's a pain when someone waits. I pay the moment an auction ends unless the seller has specified to wait for an invoice.

I have only bought on ebay, I've never sold. I normally am online as the auction ends, and click the paypal button as soon as payment due screen pops up. For those that require a check or USPS money order (getting rare now), it's in the mail same day. Sellers love me!

I've been known to click "Buy it now", go to see what else they have for sale at the same time (for combined shipping, ya know).. then umm get sidetracked

So you may just be the victim of an easily distracted/addle-brained shoppe... oh look, a chicken..

I had a guy just yesterday that bought and did not pay until this morning. I took the package to work just in case he did pay this morning and he did, I would have rather he'd paid right away but shipping doesn't start until they pay so I got an automatic 5 star shipping rating even if they don't leave feedback. If they do leave feedback they can't change the shipping speed option. Nice ebay feature IMO.

Sometimes I buy at night at home, but do not pay until morning also. I do not trust the security on my personal home computer as much as I do the one at work. I didn't realize a few hours jangled some nerves. I usually send a note to let them know what my plan is.

Sometimes I put in various bids before leaving on vacation, but I always ask them if it is OK first, I've never been turned down, in fact most seem pleasantly surprised. I have feedback of 100% with lots of comments about quick payment which I think may help. Thanks for asking, great thread.

As a buyer, I will usually pay as soon as possible unless I am watching/bidding on other items from the same seller. Most sellers will have their policy as to how long they allow a buyer to wait to remit payment.

With all of the hard-handedness that ebay uses on its customers, it is sometimes hard to remember that we are not " ebay sellers" (or whatever other venue we use), but sellers of our own entity, whether it is a business or private party. Your policy is your policy. You can make it 24 hours, 3 days, 4 days, a month, or even immediately. Your auction or fixed price listing is a legal contract between only you and the purchaser.

If you want to utilize ebay (or other venue) services, you must abide by their contract with you. So, if you want to get ebay (the venue) involved in mediating a payment dispute with your customer, you must wait four days from the time the listing ended.

My company has a five business day policy for payment, and are lenient on the matter. However, we are in the business of holding inventory on the supplies we sell. So, it's not like we are "holding" on to a specific coin that we only have one of to get rid of. Even when we do have coins for sell, we still hold our five business day policy.

Some clients pay immediately, some do not. Some of our repeat clients will even take the full alloted time to pay because they wanted to "reserve" a special promotion price, but may not have had the money right away to pay. Especially with coins, someone may be trying to "lock in" a price that they are willing to pay, but may need to wait a few days to get the money transfered to PayPal or whatever.

If you do not have any policy posted, then it is also possible the buyer may be waiting for an invoice, as well. Everybody is different, and there is no "right" or "wrong" way of buying and selling, except that each party should abide by the agreement. If there is no posted policy, then the courteous thing to do would be for one party or the other to make contact and clarify the situation, even if it is post facto of the listing closing.

As a seller, I always take the prerogative in such a situation to make sure that the buyer is truly committed to the agreement and understands my terms. I would send an invoice to the buyer and instruct them that payment would be appreciated within whatever specified amount of time is within your own liking.

All good points. I appreciate the feedback. I've only had a few sales so far and it has not been an issued. Everyone has paid either immediately or within a couple/few hours.

It didn't occur to me until this sale that I really had not put up any "policy", so I started wondering what the default value was.

It also crossed my mind that maybe they were waiting for an invoice, so I sent that the following day. I'll give it another day or so and then send a friendly e-mail reminder. He has great feedback on many transactions, so I'm sure everything is fine. Just got me to wondering what the default was.

I'd say etiquette is to pay quickly, no later than 24 hours. However, ebay makes you wait 4 days before filing a non paying bidder complaint.

Buyers can basically give a certain number of sellers the shaft per quarter without any blemish on their record.
