So I see that silver closed at USD 39.34 today. Just based on silver alone, which obviously I would expect these coins to sell for at the very least, we're talking 5x39.5 = $197.50 per coin. At this point, how reasonable is it to pay 1.25x, 1.5x 2x etc. for these coins? I don't pretend to want to snatch these things up for a song (well, I'd /like/ to, who wouldn't, but...) but I don't want to pay a giant premium for some fad coins. Seems like the rates I'm seeing on ebay are exaggerated. Obviously there is a lot of "demand" generated by dealers, to whom these coins were only sold (and just why the heck is that?) So... if I'm going to drop that much money on some precious metal in the form of a coin, is it better to go for the giant quarters set or a $50 gold eagle? I'll follow that up with this: I'm not (necessarily) collecting for an investment so price isn't a showstopper - but I don't want to throw money away, either. Thanks for your input. ~ CelticKnot P.S. Anyone tried to pay for a burrito with one of these things yet?

I feel alot of the hype came from the problems that were occurring with the distribution of the coins initially. They have already lost alot of steam and the prices have been getting lower ever since. Only time will tell where these eventually go. But I feel in the long run, these will not end up being worth much more of a premium than any other govt. bullion per ounce.

Actually you CAN "catch these for a song". I have bought 8 sets from different Authorized Purchasers for between $886 and $949 shipped. Spot for these right now (at $39.53/oz.) is $988.25... Buying these near or below the value of the metal contained is a no brainer in my book. Go to APMEX and see how much 25 Silver Eagles cost (not shipped) and compare that to the above prices. No brainer... Also...the prices on the secondary market bottomed at around $1250 or so. The last 6 raw sets on ebay sold for $1352,1499,1426,1425,1423 and 1525. The market price has reversed and is now headed back upward...

I agree, there are still coins that need to be unloaded by the authorized purchasers and due to the government clamping down on the price they have to sell them in some cases under melt! Opportunities exist, research needs to be done, but as fox says, what better deal do you need to get silver under melt value? If I had money left I would be back in!

If you did buy them how would you store them? I hear the slabs are huge, and if you get ungraded ones can you even get big enough airtites? Would you be comfortably putting a coin you paid 1.5 to 2x silver value in an airtite alone or would you want even more protection?

Jack Hunt was taking orders for them up until 10 days ago at $949/set US. www.jackhuntatb.com Per website: Quote:Our online store is currently 'Sold Out' of ATB sets. We may have more sets available after assessing our inventory. Check back to our site periodically for updates. Fidelitrade https://www.fidelitrade.com still has the old 3/11/11 information about their 500 sets @ $929.20/set but you have to fill out an application and open an account with them in order to buy a set. The application asks for SS# or taxpayer ID, and some purchasers are understandably reluctant to provide that. Possibly sold out as well and just haven't updated their website, but it's worth a try if you don't mind giving out your SS#. Quote:

The NGC slabs are the size of a DVD case. The set I am getting from JHCB will go straight into Z5 air-tites, then either rolled or placed individually in the 6"x6" wooden presentation boxes. I'm also keen on the mint tubes they were shipped in. I have not seen any of the APs offer those for sale as they sometimes do with the monster green ASE boxes. Hope that helps.

I think APMEX is selling the tubes for like $50 a monster box. ebay seems to have some too. Oh, and keep an eye on APMEX because they have only sold around 300 of their 3000 set allotment of 5 oz'er sets. I do worry after all this time about cherry picking going on the part of the AP's.

Quote:I think APMEX is selling the tubes for like $50 a monster box. ebay seems to have some too. Nice! Just saw them on e-Bay, $50 for ten tubes AND the blue monster box is a good deal, can potentially hold a set of 50... Just got to see if the hockey pucks fit back inside the tube with a Z5 airtite holder. Thanks for the reference Capt. Kirk. I do worry after all this time about cherry picking going on the part of the AP's. Cherrypicking = yes. Waiting for the Mint to relent = quite possibly. These *were* bullion products that were supposed to follow the spot price and not have incurred a numismatic premium like they did. Poor marketing strategy by the mint and then trying to correct the problem by tying the APs hands from selling to anyone at whatever price they set didn't help. It was a slow mo train wreck that could be seen when the series was signed into law.

As of 2 days ago Fidelitrade is still selling...very easy process..fill out a form..send a check..that's that.
Also...I would be very wary of storing these beasts in those Mint tubes..They are heavy and could damage each other when added/removed. The AirTites do not fit in the tubes but are fine themselves for storage.
Some AP's ship the coins in AirTites...
The boxes for sale are a novelty item....unless you can afford to buy 20 raw sets to fill them up

Eventually there is going to be someone who will make a goal of collecting each hockey puck as they are released. I might be one of those "someones" but am not entirely convinced to the practical advantages of doing so.
How does one store and/or appreciate 280 oz. of metal? I have rolls of 20 ASEs, and they are heavy, bust out 14 rolls and I'll need to find my old Radio Flyer in order to take them to the dealer!

Im put myself on the alert me list for them a while back, I have a felling they sent them to be graded and due what amark did or holding until mint backs off as they dont want to sell under melt. Thats what I'm thinking concering APMEXOn the other hand though I due have 3 sets (1 in hand 2 on the way)and I may be getting a few more sets as well . The only thing that is concering me is how will my raw sets look when they come in If you look on one of the rescent ATB threads you can see the average price on ebay raw is 1200-1300 while the graded sets are worth slightly more. Only thing I hate is how big the slabs are takes up alot of space. Maybe I like low mintage coins thats why I sold my roll of wolves to get another set of these as 33k is an attracking number considering next years mintages. Bryan

33,000 mintage per design, so 33,000 sets total. The uncirculated versions offered by the mint starting 4-28-11 have a mintage of 27,000 each, so only 27,000 possible complete sets eventually. Compare these figures to a 'pre-announced' minting of the Gettysburg 5 oz. bullion coin...minimally 125,000, with theoretically more to be minted if they sell out also since we are still early in the calendar year...the five 2010 issues cannot be restruck since those equivalent circulation quarters will not be struck this year.

So are these still available through Fideltrade? I am sending off the order form but I wish I could do it online. How long does it take to get them in the mail? Thank you so much.
