Beverly hillbillies episode Season 3 episode 29, The Big Bank Battle

I was watching The Beverly Hillbillies the other day. Mr Drysdale tries to get Jed interested in a hobby, and he suggests coin collecting. He brings along a coin folder from a friend and shows Jed an 1894-S dime who Mr Drysdale informs him "he paid $12,000 for it." This would have been in 1964.

Jed responded "...he got slickered. A dime is only worth ten cents." and asks "you mean if he put that dime in one of those candy machines would he get out $12,000 worth of candy?

Later in the episode Granny was happy and giving away candy bars because in the front hall "she found a bunch of dimes and was giving that candy machine fits".

Here are a couple screen shots from the episode.

Finding a coin collection and buying a candy bar with a 1894-S Liberty dime in a candy machine! If you could buy a 1894-S dime now, what would it be worth?

Apparently the actor who played Jed Clampet, Buddy Ebsen, was an avid coin collector and this was allegedly from his collection.

This post reminds me of the 1913 Liberty Head nickel in an episode of Hawaii Five-O. I wonder if that dime bought an ice cream cone at one point?

Don't forget the Amos and Andy Show about the 1877 Shield nickel. Copy/Paste " Amos & Andy Show-The Rare Coin-Part 1 " into a YouTube page search and it comes right-up. Very funny episode.

I was looking at an auction catalogue last year. It included an 1813 "Holey Dollar", and provided its provenance. I was aware that Buddy Ebsen had been a collector, but was impressed to see that this Australian icon had once formed part of his collection.

Might work. Worth a try if you like candy.

I will provide the candy machine if anyone would like to try their 1894-S dime in it.

Ah, the candy machine would probably kick the dime out now because it was silver!

Well there are only 24 of them known.

24 struck, 2 destroyed at the mint in monthly assays, 2 sent to Philadelphia as part of a special assay, 1 sent to Philadelphia as part of the annual assay. Nine coins are known today. This accounts for 14 of the 24 coins struck. Where are the rest of them? Only two show signs of having circulated and it is clear that the others were held as special pieces. So where are the other 10 special pieces?

Watch the early episodes of Dennis The Menace. The original Mr. George Wilson (Joseph Kearns) was an avid coin collector and just about every other episode has something to do with George losing a coin or Dennis losing one of his coins or George getting ripped off buying a coin. I like the episode where Dennis is wearing a Confederate soldiers uniform and finds a 50 dollar Confederate note in the sleeve. Everybody makes a fuss over the old bank note but in today's market the CSA jacket would be far more valuable than the piece of CSA paper.

And yes, who in our age group doesn't remember the Hawaii Five-O episode with the 1913 Liberty nickel?
