I have noticed a few people on here talking about pulling out any "S" mint cents for their collection. Am I missing something? What makes these so much better than the rest? I seem to have quite a few (in albums) but I didn't realize I might have something better than I expected.

Any info is much appreciated!

Cheers!

Proofs are minted at the San Fransisco Mint and bear the "S" mintmark.

So by Proof coins does what exactly does this mean? Are these the coins that would normally come in the sets from the mint?

that is correct, the s mint coins came from san francisco. today san francisco does not make circulating coins, they just make proofs. but if you have cents from 1968-1974 then that does not mean they are necessarily proofs. from these years san francisco actually made cents for circulation. also several years from 1955 and prior, san fran made cents for circulation.

nothing too special about s mint cents. I keep any I find though because they typically had less mintage numbers than the denver and philli coins. also because san francisco does not make circulation coins anymore, I kind of find s mint coins cool. many others save s mint cents for these reasons or similar.

Yes proofs are specialty sets from the mint, super nice ones.
There are business strike coins bearing the s mint mark, like lincolns until 1974, with much lower mintage than P and D coins, but are still very common.

Some parts of the country don't see many so they seem special to the finder but as Upsate mentioned, they are quite common.

As with many items it's basically popularity and just rumors of an extinct mint or something like this. The S mint used to make normal, regular, everyday coins just like the other mints. Then not long ago they started to specialize in Proof coins only. So people started to think that any coin with an S mint would someday be worth a massive amount of money so they started to hoard them. As the rumors of a future great investment in any S minted coins continued to spread, more and more and more people would tell others of the coming of the great increase in any S minted coins.

And it's more than just a few people, it's a lot of people. Many of the really older S minted coins are worth more but many are really not but the more that save all S minted coins, the less there are out there so yes they will be worth more. MAYBE.

The mystique of the S mint coins comes from back in the earlier part of the 20th century. As a general rule the San Francisco mint as a rule always produced fewer coins than the Denver and Philadelphia mint. Then to add to that most of the collectors lived in the eastern US and the S mint coins seldom found their way east. This meant that finding a S mint coin in circulation was something special. For that reason collectors tended to search out and hang on to any S mint coins they could find. As time passed more and more people moved to the west coast and after the interstate system came into existence travel was easier and the S mint coins became easier to find but they were still scarcer then the P and D coins. Not really worth more or much but the mystique lived on.
