i live in east county and the only place I know of that has free coin counting is pacific trust bank, and today they started charging 10% to non members. I could get a membership but I think they would get annoyed at my commercial use when I dont even really bank there.

if anyone lives in san diego, where do you dump all of your coins? any credit unions have free counting? or are there any other banks that dont mind dumping?

This is probably not what you want to hear, but I use the Coinstar machines. You can find them all over, sometimes with a 8.9% fee, and some at 9.2%. When I go through 10,000 coins, I get about 18% coppers, about 12% more MS "savers". That means I pay about 9% to get rid of the 7000 duds. 7000 x 9% = $6.30. So I pay about 6-7% for the privilege of searching 10,000 coins. Looked at another way each "keeper" costs me about 1.23 cents !

For me, the $6 -$7 price is less to pay, than the time, and gas spent trying to locate a "dump" bank. I live in the Poway area.

Best,

i guess that works with pennies but when dumping a box of nickels that would hurt. 2000 nickels costs $100. dumping a few boxes would be quite costly.

Check for a Credit Union. I don't know if SchoolsFirst FCU has branches down there.... it's based in OC.

The one by me used to. It was OCTFCU back in the day. If I remember correctly, there was a 200 dollar limit per day or else there was a charge. Made a few trips when my roommate was a teacher. It was a self service machine.

....Come to think of it...my girlfriend is a teacher. I don't know why I haven't asked if her CU has a coin counter yet.

David, I know LBS financial has one with a 200 dollar limit as well. Might check to see if there's one around your area.

You could probably dump tons of coins without them caring, as long as you deposit it directly into your account. Then get a debit card for that account to buy what ever. Just a thought.:)

Let me know how it goes murrellington! I just went to the website and they have a branch in Riverside, still a bit of a drive for me, but If I can dump 1 or 2 hundred there a week, then I'll be happy. That's the first time I've seen a Coinmax machine. Looks cheerful .

anyway, I use chase and SDCCU. I only get a box a week. I know of nowhere that has them.

Rsxtacee: I've been dumping at pacific trust bank for a few months now. nothing has been said. not sure if they even recognize me. I dump once every 2-3 weeks. and I dump about 5 to 6 boxes at a time. they just started charging a fee for non members on the 11th this month so today I got an account. I am getting the debit card soon.

so yeah, when I dump I will just deposit it all. and if I need the money for more boxes I will withdraw at the atm. it's a nice deal they have, i'd go check it out if I were you. they have free checking. you need $100 to open an account, but the next day you can withdraw it. and there are no fees for the checking account.
